As I've posted before, it may be possible that the Nazi regime could lose those qualities of evil we've assigned to it from history, if political realignments continue as extrapolated. After all, for those pro-Israeli Jews being criticized, one would have to look at what happened in the Gaza War, and perhaps conclude that "this is what 'securing a future for your people' looks like."

To add on to what Campfire said, we are arguably at this point because the dignity and decorum of old was practiced by professionals who were those exact same palm-greasing neocon fools you complain about. The modern mean-tweeting style simply exposes the rot that was always under the surface.

I have honestly been reading this whole subthread with the early dating websites rolled in with dating apps in my head. I wonder if that changes the dynamics, or if "dating app" has to specifically mean mobile apps and not just any Internet dating service.
It would certainly suggest immense corruption and inefficiency on the part of the Mexican government to have to compete with the cartels on popular sentiment vis-a-vis resource marshaling. That, or the cartels are able to do so because they are concentrated in states, and not spread across all of Mexico.

Microsoft was on some weird stuff in the tail end of the 90's. They were publishing some killer PC games (Midtown Madness, MechWarrior 3), they launched their own version of the then-newly-commercially-viable optical mouse (the IntelliEye), they had the legendary Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick, and software like Bob was also paried with less-well-remembered oddities like Microsoft Chat.

I haven't yet seen an explanation for why, either. Maybe the meme about TikTok being a foreign influence vector was precisely the motivation for people seeking out a more obviously-Chinese app? RedNote has been flooded with left-leaning Western users whose brand of leftism is alien and even dangerous to China's brand of leftism.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask this question: does the US Government have an opening to put the screws on Google and Apple vis-a-vis their mobile app stores?
Those are pretty important chokepoints for public exposure, and that Google and Apple have made walled gardens that make it easier to choke out anyone the government doesn't like.

To jump off of this post downthread about the vibe shift around tech vs. the-rest-of-society, with the TikTok ban fast approaching, I have some thoughts to share:

This ban might be for naught: another app, known as RedNote, is being positioned as the next TikTok, and this app is more directly connected/controlled by China. This obviously seems like an own-goal. RedNote's developer is apparently hiring English-language content moderators to meet the rush head-on.

Related to this: where has the rest of the US tech sphere been on this? Were they silently hoping that Bytedance would sell such a massive platform to one of them, or hoping that the ban would drive users to their equivalent platforms? Do they regret taking this stance since the ban sets a dangerous precedent and these potential upsides will likely fail to materialize?

And related to that: will the vibe shift around tech post-Trump-reelection focus on "surveillance capitalism?" TikTok, as Fight For The Future likes to point out, was by far not unique in how it could potentially spy on users. Will the left laser-focus on the negatives of Big Tech social media now that Twitter and Facebook are staking themselves out as unfriendly territory?

Edit: Interestingly, RedNote apparently has zero geographical siloing, and the CCP has been quick to breathe down RedNote's neck about it.

I stopped in part because they seemed to be deliberately enshittifying the experience by replacing comfortable furniture with bare wood, and kinda making the overall vibe less inviting.

there's no similar footage of Ukrainians killing themselves when wounded vs the abundance on the Russian/NK side, so the ratio of dead per casualty taken for Russia must be pretty horrific.

Seconded. I've tried not to comment on this topic, but my personal take is that this is a tragedy and a farce that so many were failed, and all the qualifications about how little could be done to not fail the victims can't overpower the tragedy-porn aspect of it for me.
Also, while it's just one isolated post, I did find this on Bluesky today.
