Why is Europe, especially
northernwestern Europe, so weird?
There's an obvious answer but I dont think it's one a lot users here are going to like.
Im asking a question is "avian flu spreading freely in American cattle" or are partisan operatives in the cdc trying to muddy the waters?
Fact is that the Influenza A pandemic of '68, and the swine flu outbreak of '09 were both more deadly on a case-by-case basis than covid-19 turned out to be. Covid was not unique in its risk factors, it was unique in that that it came at an opportune time.
Edit: given what we have since learned about the whole "lab leak theory" a cynic might fibd themselves suggesting that Fauci and friends are litteraly the bad guys from V for Vendetta.
That does not answer the question.
Ill ask again how do you reconcile your claim that debates dont matter with the observation that Biden's poor debate performance effectively killed his chances of winning the election come November?
It not something they "miss", the complexity of the world and its associated uncertainty are what the "debunkers" are actively raging against.
Its not Hillary derangement syndrome its Clinton derangement syndrome, just as CNN is the Clinton News Network. The GOP all through the 90s was best summed up by that Arron Paul meme "he cant keep getting away with it"
Hilary is in the potentially unique position of being the one of the only politicians in the US who is more polarizing than Trump.
How do you reconcile this statement with what has unfolded over the last month or so?
If debates didn't matter, Joe Biden would be still favored to win the election in November.
Is it really "tempting fate" or is it just battlespace prep for November?
Is that really "a problem"
Is decision making under pressure an athletic skill?
I would say "no" but can also see where and/or why others might disagree.
Quick feet and a strong arm are one thing, grace under pressure and a readiness to adapt are another
Indeed, It's a core example of the old "Shakespeare is unoriginal" or "Seinfeld is unfunny" trope. It only appears derivative because everyone has spent the last umptysquat years riffing off of it. When it was new it was genuinely new.
Isn't that sort of the point of the movie?
Indeed, see also the critiques of Casablanca, and Gone With The Wind.
The OP doesnt seem to realize that there was a time before current year girl-bosses where in it was kind of expected that the audience would recognize that Scarlett was something of a "see you next thursday" and that this is a major part of why Clarke Gable (Rhett) telling her he doesn't give a damn about her stupid bullshit drama is such an iconic moment.
Ditto Lauren Bacall batting her eyes at Bogie only to be rebuffed and yet still kinda get what she wanted. I want to make it clear that I'm not doing this because you tried to whore yourself out to me, i'm doing this because fuck the Nazis.
That bit jumped out at me as well. Even amongst the Dev Set that strikes me as a very FAANG / SV centric point of view.
Even today i would expect the violent crime (or at least the lethal variety thereof) to follow a similar pattern. Murders generally dont happen "out of the blue" and when they do happen (see Asian ladies getting pushed in front of trains) they get treated as news-worthy precisely because they are a deviation from the norm.
To paraphrase Heath Ledger's Joker, nobody freeks out when a gangbanger gets shot.
I completely agree with you regarding his work ethic and lack of pride/ego which I believe is the secret of his longevity, and the reason that he totally deserves each and every one of those Superbowl Rings.
At the same time I can think of multiple QBs off the top of my head who I would rank above him in terms of raw talent and athleticism.
I don't think we're all that far off from eachother.
Ditto depressed wages, rise of "the gig economy", etc...
The Boeing issue was somwhat unique in that it was arguably the result of a vulnerability that had been purposefully introduced.
A conscious choice was made to change the emergancy autopilot disconnect from a physical switch to a software one and also to exempt certain autopilot functions from said disconnect switch thus invalidating the existing pilot checklist procedure for bad air data.
Im not in a position to confirm but that seem quite plausible and dove-tails with some of what I've heard.
For some reason i find myself thinking of this old XKCD 😉
Trump is an irreligious life long New York Democrat with pre-NAFTA Democrat values.
...with some sopps to American exceptionalism and being pro capital.
Which makes him "far right" relative to the managerial class of current year. But in truth he's a 90s-era centerist.
I may have been being a little uncharitable there.
You're probably right.
Agreed on LeBron, I'd rank either Kobe or Shaq' over him but Messi probably deserves a spot near the top.
Brady was also able to coast on the abilities of his team.
Dont get me wrong, he totally earned his Superbowl Rings, but it's a lot easier to rack up an absurd win-count when you spend the bulk of your career standing behind one of the best O-lines in the league.
17/100 are from Baseball, a sport that is played by Americans and Dominicans, and the 30x smaller country is somehow better.
Japan, Korea, and a good chunk of Southeast Asia might like a word. Ditto the rest of the Caribean.
Its not that "Christians don't lie" so much that the Christian worldview in general and Western attitudes regarding individual worth and the treatment of servants/subordinates in particular are unusually conducive to building trust in an otherwise low trust environment.
At the same time are we sure "wouldn't they start lying again once they become atheists?" Is not exactly what we are seeing? Do you believe that the Democratic party of Jimmy Carter would've allowed the current situation to occur? What about the party of Truman?
