I am under the impression that golden parachutes are given to new CEOs of already failing companies, since even a good CEO is likely to fail at saving the company, and you won't get a good CEO to accept the job with such a high risk of not getting paid. And that the CEO still has an incentive to succeed because they get paid even more if they're successful.

Giving someone a service they never asked for, then claiming they owe you for it, is a classic scam. And this isn't the 16th century. There is nowhere you can run that a government won't find you. They own everything.

Putin has agency of his own. He's had plenty of opportunity to offer actual peace terms (that aren't "give up all your weapons and we promise we won't invade you while you're in the perfect position to be invaded") and hasn't tried to this day.

That is STILL A PROBLEM.
If a large dog is charging at a small vulnerable child with uncertain intent, it would be utterly irresponsible to let the dog do whatever mysterious thing it's planning to do when it reaches the baby.

Even if it's too late for pre-commitment, if you're the kind of person who decides it's not too late and only opens the 1 box, it'll have the money.
