My mistake, I wrongly thought the small object on the ground was the Taser which had been knocked out of the officer’s hand. I have amended my earlier comment, but still think the shooting could be construed as reasonable.
You really should watch the video, via VPN or something if necessary.
From what I can see, it looks like one (female) officer attempts to tase the suspect but it is unclear whether the Taser shot actually hit the suspect. Whether or not it did, two other officers then pile on to the suspect, who goes down onto the ground, but he may not have been subdued by the Taser and might still be holding a knife in his right hand. The suspect’s right hand is not visible, either on the video or to the officers, as it is occluded by the body of the suspect (who is lying on his right side). Then a 4th officer draws his firearm and shoots the suspect 3 times.
It seems incontrovertible to me that the officer who fired the fatal shots could have reasonably believed that lethal force was necessary: the suspect may not have been incapacitated by the Taser, plus he may have held onto the knife in his right hand. Both of these are very reasonable assumptions given the events leading up to the shooting, and together imply that the suspect posed a deadly threat to the officers.

I mean, I recall the (now quaint) claims that free/open source software could never work at scale, because talented developers would never work for free, but I don’t recall accusations of outright communism. How is that remotely reflective of reality? In the first place, there is no central allocative body to “take from each according to his ability and distribute to each according to his need”; secondly, absolutely nothing prevents anyone from maintaining or supporting open source software for pay, as indeed many do.

This is actually my nuanced, enlightened centrist take: AI as a technology—or more precisely, a suite of technologies—is potentially as revolutionary as the internet, electricity, and steam power rolled into one, but current investments in AI may very well turn out to be myopic or premature. For one entirely plausible example, we may end up in a world where distilled models git gud and thus inference is mostly done locally on cheap, commodity hardware like smartphones, which would render the hundreds of billions being poured into data centers largely wasted.

I didn’t see this before I commented upthread that a reasonable cop in that situation could have decided that lethal force was necessary. If anything, the video from this angle only strengthens my previous claim: before, I thought that the cop who fired his gun did not know whether the suspect had a knife in his right hand, but could reasonably have feared that he did; now, I see that the cop did, in fact, know with certainty that the suspect was holding a knife.
AFAICT the only argument against the cop’s actions is that the suspect was already on the ground at the time shots were fired. This is true, but a knife-wielding maniac on the ground can still pose a deadly threat to those around him, particularly when the knife and the hand holding it have just wriggled free of an LEO’s grasp and when it is not clear that the knife-wielder was successfully tased. The fact that the suspect appeared to be on the ground at the precise moment of the shooting is not dispositive of anything: he had, a few seconds prior, forcefully regained full control of a deadly weapon, and thus an officer could reasonably fear that he would strike someone with it.
