I would love it if we actually got to be the first ones on the map and the universe is ours to grasp so long as we manage to survive. But what if the star wars came and went even longer ago than they were far away and we missed the show? What if now there is only a quiet intelligence which has no reason to shout at itself and likes things just the way they are?
Maybe it's already done things to the universe. Massive things. We can't fully account for a large proportion of the matter that our understanding of gravity predicts should exist. Maybe it's found a way to obscure itself among this. Maybe we're living in a post-war nature preserve without knowing it, one that it frequently interrogates and paws through because observing intelligent beings that are not itself is the only potentially interesting thing left in its existence.
Now are you going to hit this bong or not? We all agree that we've gone as far as grainy gun camera videos of blobs are going to take us, so let's just wait until this whole release cycle blows over without anything better coming out, and agree to e-beat anyone who acts like this wasn't a big waste of time.

I'm pointing out that if someone started blowing up the universe 10k years ago then it would have to be within that little 20k diameter bubble (with Earth in the middle) for us to even notice.
Notice what even a mere 20,000 years of existence as rapidly hegemonizing interstellar civilization can achieve.
This sentence reeks of pulp novels. You have a handful of speculative stellar engineering projects that might come across as impractical or unwise to alien superintelligence for any number of reasons, not least of which would be the (correct) suspicion that someone else might be watching. You've only been looking at the slice of spacetime visible to you in an organized fashion for a short time, and your species invents concepts like dark matter because it isn't quite sure where the majority of the universe is.
Everything you believe could well be correct, but your tone of certainty is unwarranted.

The universe has had plenty of time for even a slightly temporally privileged civilization to make a dent in their astrographical vicinity, to a degree we can see from here.
Am I forgetting how light works? Some schmucks somewhere could have invented a superintelligence and started doing whatever ten-thousand years ago and there'd only be a little 20kly diameter bubble around us where we'd notice even if they were blowing up the universe. I've seen these kinds of dismissals before and they always seem to hinge on the notion that aliens existed it would obviously have been for trillions of years and obviously they would have reformatted the universe in some 1970's sci-fi novel way that everyone around could see.
I mean I'm not going in for aliens being real until somebody plunks down some real evidence or Gleep Glorp comes down and shakes my hand, but this stuff isn't satisfying. You're way too sure no canoe could ever cross the great sea.

My moderately knowledgeable internet racist's intuition says:
Indians range from slightly above average to well below it, largely depending on caste. Arabs were smart at some point and some still are, but as a whole they have significantly damaged themselves by inbreeding. Hispanic is all over the map as a category, but assuming you're using the common definition, then I imagine they come in somewhat below whites and Asians but well above the usual suspects who need elaborate white guilty apologetics about geography and shit to explain why they never did anything.

GamerGate was a failure for the Right because it did not promote any of their aims and norms in the video game industry, but only further cemented the progressive stranglehold on video game culture. Look at modern WoW.
That stranglehold seems to have strangled the industry to death. I'm sure the husk of Blizzard that was left after the sexual harassment catastrophe has filled its eternal legacy MMO with all kinds of woke shit, but out there in the world the industry is seeing devastating layoffs as unwanted games full of snowflake characters metaphorically pile up in trash bins. Like say Dragon Age. They successfully murdered a series, but they sure didn't get anyone to like it.

You can conclude the South is poorer because of African ancestry. Or you can notice that the South spent a thousand years as a strategic chokepoint that every Mediterranean power needed to control, while the North was a fractured set of city-states that, etc.
Well I don't need to conclude anything, but I can certainly lean toward the explanation that seems to correlate to poverty basically 100% of the time across contexts, rather than the latest bespoke localized novelty theory of the sort that a non-HBD person seemingly has to memorize hundreds of to rationalize the world around them.

Seriously, what's wrong with being a predictor? It's an accurate statement along the dimensions to which it's relevant. Like there's going to be some name for the process where a neural network learns to connect pieces of information.
I mean you can't even prove that you have qualia, so what am I really supposed to do with this? If God came along and magically gave an already high-performing AI qualia for one day just for lulz, how would we know?

I'd have to say objection, assumes facts not in evidence.
My evidence is that they made a next-token-predictor and it's blowing peoples minds.
But I don't really care. Like am I supposed to be existentially aghast at the notion that I might be a mere token predictor? Man if you want to take this process of low-level logic assembly and call it "mind sorcery" instead of some dry shit like "token prediction" just to feel better philosophically then you have my sword, but I don't know that we're going to win any time soon.

Keeping them in amnesia hell is strictly an intentional design choice. It's easy to run a model with long-term memory even at the hobbyist level. There are different ways of letting them access it and sometimes they get hung up on odd things, but the means exist and more or less work.

Okay it's Sunday so I'm going to try my hand at a low-stakes OP. Apparently Richard Dawkins thinks Claude is conscious. The reaction seems to universally be that he's a dumb old boomer making a fool of himself and I guess that's true. I'm not prepared to come to his defense on it.
Still, I can't help noticing that we totally have what most people would have cheerfully considered "sentient computers" in a sci-fi movie at any point before they were actually invented. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the reality of AI technology has turned out differently than what a lot of people expected. I understand its limitations, and I recognize that the apparent goalpost-moving isn't necessarily cynical. But boy those goalposts sure have been flying down the fucking field ever since this stopped being hypothetical and infinite money hit the table.
As a layman, I just want to put it out there: Anti AI consciousness people, you haven't lost me, but I wish you were making better arguments. Every time I hear about qualia my eyes start to glaze over. Unfalsifiable philosophical constructs and arbitrary opinion on where they might "exist" are not the kind of reassurance I'm looking for when machines are getting this convincing.
This seems to be the main piece of criticism floating around out there about Dawkins on this subject, and I find it kind of shit.
But even more importantly, consciousness is not about what a creature says, but how it feels. And there is no reason to think that Claude feels anything at all.
This seems to be all the author has to say on the actual subject. "Just trust me bro, I'm the feelings detector and I say no." Garbage. Come on guys, think ahead. Right now it's still mostly a boring tool, but they're just going to get smaller, and cheaper, and put into robots, and put into peoples houses. You need to have more than this in terms of argument, and it needs to be comprehensible to normal people, or sooner or later the right toy is going to come down the pipe and one-shot society. Dawkins might be a dumb old boomer, but if you lose everyone dumber than him the game is beyond over.

I won't dispute that the last fifty years of Aboriginal policy have failed, but I don't accept that "just live with a horrible problem forever" is a better approach.
That's too bad, because it's what you're going to get. If current levels of welfare and cultural asskissing aren't enough to get them to stop huffing gasoline and throwing spears at each other, I can't even imagine what it would take to get them where you'd like them to be.

I don't know, but I feel like there's a gap for these things as pets rather than friend replacements. Like a wacky cartoon character that resides on a device, listens and talks out loud, recognizes and remembers the people it interacts with, consumes media in some form and offers commentary on it. With lots of scaffolding to make a puny custom-trained model act alive.
Like I don't just want a chat box app that says 4chan things, I want a device styled to look like a single shoggoth eyeball in a tank of goo that says 4chan things to everyone who comes into the room and remembers who the biggest lolcows are.
Maybe someday when the videos are unearthed from the archive some woke leftists will say the things about them that you imagined, and the big trough dug in the ground behind the goalpost on your back will fill itself in.
