Culture War Roundup for the week of May 25, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

If you change your mind, you can still get implants

So long as you're willing to get regular MRI scans to make sure the implant has not silently ruptured:

Saline-filled breast implants Saline-filled implants are filled with saltwater. The surgeon inserts the empty shell and, once it’s in place, fills it with saline until it’s the desired size.

Some people prefer saline-filled implants because:

if a saline implant gets a leak or rupture in its shell or its valve fails, it’s usually obvious because the saline leaks out and the breast appears deflated

saline is harmless and absorbed by the body

you don’t need to get routine MRI screenings to check for silent rupture (implant break that doesn’t cause any noticeable symptoms)

However, a disadvantage of saline implants is that some people think they feel less natural than silicone implants. Also, rippling and wrinkling on the surface of the implant is more likely to be visible through the skin.

Silicone-filled breast implants Silicone-filled implants are pre-filled with silicone gel.

Some people prefer silicone-filled implants because:

they may look and feel softer and more like natural breast tissue than saline implants

the surgeon might be able to provide more brands and styles of implants to choose from (since more of the implants on the market are silicone-filled)

There are several disadvantages of silicone-filled implants, though, related to what happens if there is a rupture.

If a silicone-filled implant ruptures, it’s harder to recognize because the implant often maintains its shape. If the silicone gel comes out of the implant, it can stay in the body and may spread to nearby tissues or to other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes or the lungs.

Sure, no problem. Chop off your boobs when you're too young to vote or drink, and then if you change your mind, get surgery for fake boobs which you just have to be careful about them leaking into your lungs. Great choices there!

Oh, it gets better. On the off chance you decide to have a kid after all this, you can look forward to stuff like this:

I'm numb on the top of my chest, and I continue to be unable to feel on my skin [my son], or myself, or my boyfriend or anyone... But there's like chest tissue that is becoming engorged and filling with milk that is trapped in between scar tissue that's under my chest. I got these, like, rocks in my chest. When it happens, you can see it physically, like my chest getting large rocks in it, but it's not two, like breasts... it's little rocks and lumps and they're hot, and they're painful, and you can physically see it.
