I wholeheartedly recommend that you do as I did, and gradually isolate yourself from interacting with absolutely everybody, except for the cases where one of you or both are acting in a professional capacity. (For context: I am recommending it because I'm a misogynist.)

It is possible to make such a recommendation without being a misogynist.

I admire the strong boldness or complete ignorance to make a statement like that; my only addendum being it isn’t exactly wrong to ‘conclude’ that, if your life experience has led you down the path of understanding and realization that “lack of success doesn’t prove lack of effort,” when it comes to the romance game. If you come up empty or find yourself at a dead end you can have it anyway you want: with the self-pity; or without it.

Friendship, romance—same thing (1 2).

I don’t know about that one. I have friends who have married their wife and others who married their female best friend they’d known all their lives. The former has seemed to prove more successful than the latter.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
