Video game thread

What are you playing these days?

I will be playing through Half-Life soon. I noticed I didn't have it in my Steam library so I picked up the Anthology bundle for a couple of dollars. Only a couple of years have passed since the last time I played HL, but for some reason I'm drawn to it again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still waiting for a reasonably priced 5120x2160, 39 inch ultrawide monitor to show up. I'm sort of holding off on some games until I can upgrade my monitor. Some games aren't well suited for playing on the TV.

Heroes of Might and Magic 5 lately Tribes of the East.

It's not as good as my memories of HoMM 2 and 3, but I suspect those wouldn't match my memories of what they were either. Truly you can't go back home again.

It's fun! Heroes seem a bit less powerful then previously though I haven't played long enough to find the truly broken artifacts) and who doesn't like a smash fantasy creatures into each other simulator. Stronghold (the anti magic orcs) are well thought out if a little pushed like so many DLC factions can be.

Have you tried HoMM Olden Era yet?¨

Edit: I'm gonna try HooMM 5 Tribes of the east!

Not yet, but I'll do it sometime soonish.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
