Can anyone explain the whole KDS - Kimi Derangement Syndrome that is going on? I kinda got the hype around deepseek - something that cheap to be that good. But Kimi i don't understand. It is quite expensive and it seems that no one is doing something interesting with open weights models once they are released from the labs. So what gives?
I think many people form an emotional bond with a model that happens to communicate on their wavelength. For me I particularly enjoyed talking to gemini 3.1 pro and gpt 4.1, even though there are more intelligent and truthful models out there. But those models are also great at gaslighting me. Once I asked a question to both 3.1 and gpt pro and thought 3.1's answer was sooo much better. But then I asked someone who worked in the field, who told me that gemini was mostly wrong.
Anyways back to the point less sophisticated users who buy into the hype are liable to mistake this smooth communication as a sign of exceptional intelligence. It's not.
Kimi might be the strongest open weight model right now but that title changes hands frequently. By no account is it leaps and bounds above its competitors. Some very noisy people just like the model.
