I was considering it for dog defense, mostly, but apparently it's legally questionable to carry one and actually ever use it in a self-defense scenario.

I've pondered getting one of those novelty 12" baseball bats to carry when I'm running as a dog deterrent. So far, the aggressive dogs who have come after me have been deterred by the rocks I've picked up (amazing how even obnoxious dogs recognize what it means when a human bends down to grab a rock), but there is bound to be one eventually that isn't deterred by that.

I'm confused, are there not leash laws where you are? Are dogs running around free the way they did in the 70s?

It's a rural area. Loose dogs with bad attitudes running around the countryside are a Thing.

If the baton would be taken as evidence of ill intent, maybe the bat would signal that you’re planning a comedy sketch?

Proof I'm on the way to the littlest league.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
