Wellness Wednesday for July 22, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

I went to the Philippines last week. I was invited to speak at a university function, and did. Positives: they paid for every damn thing, including the minibar. There are many many people who speak excellent English even in the most unlikely places. Negatives: wow, it is not Japan. Beggars, general dirtiness, garbage, slums (at least in parts of Manila, where I was only briefly.) Cheap shit everywhere. Rain and heat.

Contrary to numerous warnings from Japanese friends, I enjoyed all my meals. Lots of meats. At least two dead animals per meal, actually. (I love animals.) There was one Mexican place in Manila that had the most amazing Tacos al carbon I've had outside the US. A grungy place where i had to walk down the road to buy a beer, then bring it back to the Mexican place. The young guy behind the counter helpfully pried off the bottlecap (I had left my keys and keyfob with bottle opener in Japan.)

In the spirit of the thread, I'm fine. Recently had bloodwork done and my liver function is surprisingly normal, my kidneys, weak as they are, haven't deteriorated, and have in fact bounced back a bit. I still love my wife and my sons beyond measure. And at my job, the surgeons and dermatologists who work on my same floor have started acknowledging me in a quasi-friendly way. In Japan, the secret to human interaction when you yourself are not Japanese is: Be predictable.

Donald Glover once quipped that Filipinas are the black women of Asian women. Did that jibe with your experience?

I find Filipinas almost unfathomably beautiful. And for some reason, 100% of those I've met have been either accountants or nurses (or some profession extremely similar to nursing).

I am not sure what Childish Gambino meant, but there were many very very pretty girls in my audience. Not quite Olivia Rodrigo level but close. I was stricken by their educated, articulate English, but that's probably my Japan experience.

For me, a thoroughgoing attractive Japanese girl with typical Japanese behavior is well nigh unbeatable in terms of attractiveness. That's probably a product of time on task. And of course for me any woman is only as beautiful as much as she resembles my wife.

Not quite Olivia Rodrigo level but close.

TIL Rodrigo is half-Filipina. I thought she was Hispanic.

The global Latina belt strikes again.
