What is something that you completely can not understand why it exists?
From time to to time I notice something and I am like wow there is a market for this.

One big one for me has always been Starbucks. I can not imagine paying their prices for coffee. And I generally want a coffee within the first 15 minutes of waking up so the idea of putting on clothing and going to a coffee store everyday seems both a huge waste of time and money.

So for the most part I can’t understand the volume of business at coffee stores.

Starbucks I don't know, here they seem to be more around malls and their clientele for their extremely sweetened coffee inspired drinks is mostly affluent women, so it makes sense.

When I go to the office in person, or leave my apartment to head pretty much anywhere in the morning, the Tim Hortons and McDonalds are on the way, so I stop at either one of them every time, at the drive thru, to get breakfast to eat while waiting in traffic. A coffee and a tolerable breakfast sandwich is usually like 5-6 CAD, which I don't mind paying for the benefit of not having to wake up earlier to make myself breakfast at home. So that's between 1 and 3 times a week, I can imagine I'm not alone doing this, I think their business can be doing just fine in that context.

I understand that with McDonalds. But I would not that all their capex is funded thru selling burgers. The egg sandwich and coffee only needs to make more than the labor costs in the morning. And McDonalds is of course very good at execution and getting your stuff fast.

Feel like I’m being forgetful today but I usually have a few things where I don’t quite understand how something gets financed.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
