I posted the original in last Sunday’s small question thread, but posting my reply here.

Thanks you to @Thoroughlygruntled, @yofuckreddit, @MathWizard, @Hieronymus, @charlesf, @erwgv3g34, @Vollerei, @KingOfTheBailey, @orthoxerox, @Rex, @TowardsPanna, @chooky, @WhiningCoil, @ulyssessword, @birb_cromble, @aqouta, and @ToaKraka for the computer game recommendations. Before this post, I was already playing Skyrim and Baldur’s Gate III. I also bought The Long Dark.

I have a lot of work to do if I’m going to get through these. I’ll keep you all up to date. As @yofuckreddit said, it would be best if I was unemployed for a whole year so I could play them.

Does the combat in BG3 ever become less of a chore?

If you hate the turn-based combat, you should quit while you're ahead.

I loved Divinity: Original Sin (1 and 2), but bounced off of Baldur's Gate 3. I don't think it's the turn-based nature that did it for me.

What was it?

I am relieved to hear other people have complaints about BG3 combat. I am pretty sure the problem is just 5e. One issue is 5e combat is extremely simple (especially low-level), and you don't really feel like you're making tactical decisions. In Divinity: Original Sin, you're doing more than 1 action per turn so it feels a little more fun.

BG3 is a faithful adaptation of 5e, which means it's mainly a narrative and story game, not a tactical strategy game.

I honestly don't know, but there was something about the combat (in the early game, I never got to the late game) that just turned me off.

If I had to guess, things felt too slow, and I had to go through the motions (and/or wait for others to do the same) before making a meaningful choice. But it's been a while so the impressions have faded.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
