  • Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
  • Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
  • Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Now you are really confusing me.

It absolutely is a technical analysis (and market timing) system combined with fundamentals. In fact, by most practitioners, more time is spent mastering the technicals than is spent on digging into a company's products, leadership, reports, narrative, etc.

Why do you think the book starts out with a hundred pages of charts in chapter 1? You can't claim to have learned the system if you haven't learned to interpret and value charts.

from my understanding, CAN-SLIM is fundamentals boosted by technical analysis. Not technical analysis alone.

my interpretation of our discussion till now has been:

  1. you propose using technical analysis as the sole basic idea. and not as something to overlay on fundamental analysis (which CAN-SLIM is).
  2. my own interpretation is that technical analysis (charting), if true, should not have anything to do with the underlying fundamentals of whatever we are charting / analysing technically. Whether it is AAPL or GLD, charts should work on human nature rather than the properties of Apple's earnings or Gold's no earnings.
    Please correct.

I have never at any point proposed using technical analysis alone. I have no idea how you got that idea.

Interpreting a chart will help you decide what to buy, when to buy, and when to sell.

From this. As i said, this is what i interpreted as (that is different from claiming that you have exactly said that).

Nowhere have you said: "assess the fundamentals of a company (or sector), and then overlay technical analysis and charting to correctly identify the points (or areas) of when to buy and when to sell, etc.?". Or any other elaborate or simple explanation.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
