Wellness Wednesday for July 29, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

I decided to get a plumber to evaluate my sump pump situation. The guy who came is the best tradesman I have dealt with in forever.

First, he didn't insist everything be brought up to code if he were going to touch it.

Second, he offered multiple options ranging from "you pay me to make sure your minimum viable solution is in fact viable" to "perfect repair."

Third, he answered every one of my questions thoroughly and made sure I felt my question had been answered.

And most importantly, he let me dither over the various options, including me talking myself from the cheapest to the most complete, and insisted I take the time to review each bid before deciding, which he emailed that evening.

If his work is half as good as his estimate process I will be pleased.

I managed to do the deck repairs. Now I need to seal the wood. Next up will probably be deciding if I will replace the broken glass panes in my windows myself. And replace the cords that are broken. And reglaze them. And remove the paint from the ones that have been painted to return to the pretty stained wood. All because if I replaced our wooden windows with aluminum or whatever they are now made of, my husband would return from the dead and throttle me. Fortunately I can check out a variable temp heat gun from the library.
