That sequence of events was caused by the money, and would be a monkey’s paw.

In the original Monkey's Paw, it gets them their money by killing their son. I wouldn't consider a perfectly-fulfilled wish with bad consequences to be a Monkey's Paw.

It's the difference between:

A: I want a Porche 911 here right now!
Genie: Okay! Vroom, Smash!!

and

A: I want a Porche 911 here right now!
Genie: Okay!

I don't dispute that the OWW occasionally grants wishes in a straightforward way.

The male shopkeeper at the magic shop made a wish, and it is implied he is perfectly satisfied with it. And Ian's wish for a million dollars is fulfilled with no gotchas.

But there are elements like the female shopkeeper's utter unhelpfulness. (Oh, you've gotten complaints from OWW customers who have died or wanted to die because of their wishes, maybe give a little bit more of a warning to the next customer then instead of saying it in a way that implies it is no big deal so he thinks you're joking?)

Whether they're literally demons or not, the two shopkeepers and the OWW customer service guy are definitely malevolent entities.

The two shopkeepers know they work in a spooky cursed curio shop and are doing a bit, let them have their fun.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
