Weekly Finance Thread - 2026-08-22

A weekly thread to discuss financial matters - from personal all the way up to global.

Ground Rules

  • Remember that we're all just Internet randos. Don't bet your life savings on a hot tip from this thread.
  • Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
  • Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
  • Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

What do you think is an appropriate P/E for the following companies? I was looking at them this week and I was a little surprised at how things have crept upwards this year.

  • Costco (currently 46x)
  • Walmart (currently 37x)
  • Waste Management (currently 32x)
  • Sysco (currently 23x)
  • TSMC (currently 30x)
  • Airbus (currently 37x)
  • Coca cola (currently 27x)

I am not a domain expert on most of these stocks, but I'll glance at financials and then do my level best.

Costco. 30x. My high valuation is based the large amount of consumer surplus generated, allowing them to raise prices a lot. Consider that many customers would gladly pay 2x for their membership. I would.

Walmart. 20x. Same as Costco but less so. This is key infrastructure.

Waste Management. 14x. Stable but low growth and limited in how much it can expand.

Sysco: 11x. Low growth. Sector is bad.

TSMC: 30x. I think the market is right on this one. It's the world's most important company. Value at 60x with a 50% CCP invasion discount.

Airbus: 10x. Euro stocks should be valued at discounted value of dividends. Currently yields less than 2%. This company will never be bought out and innovation is zero. Will eventually get replaced by China.

Coca-Cola: 12x. I have no idea how they have dodged the apocalypse visited on similar stocks like Kraft-Heinz. Competition is intense. There are no more markets to conquer. And GLP-1s are just getting started.
