Culture War Roundup for the week of August 24, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

they were the ones who spared me from being subjected to endless cultural veneration

Oh you were subjected to endless cultural veneration all right.

Thankfully I have you to enlighten me on how humiliated and indoctrinated I was by watching an "esoterical symbol" win.

Yes- that wasn't simple Action-Adventure Romp you were watching as a kid, it's a powerful vehicle for esoteric symbolism and the creators know the message they are sending by making use of those symbols.

And the Aryan Mensch's propaganda would be better for me how?

Maybe it would make them care about not being demographically replaced by the third world. Instead of endless propaganda promoting the opposite. All the messaging they have received tells them they are evil if they care about their countries not being swarmed with third world immigrants. And if they try to resist it they will be defeated and humiliated by the Hero with a superior moral compass.

You can blame the guy who has singlehandedly lost so much aura for the Aryans that no one a shade of hair of skin darker than them wants them to have control of the culture again. Or your good friend AvocadoPanic who'd have us watch "AvocadoPanic is better than you: the movie".

You can blame the guy who has singlehandedly lost so much aura for the Aryans

Saying "lost aura" is handwaving the actual cultural processes that put Hitler as a symbolic representation of the greatest evil ever. The cultural processes are encoding that dialectic within these films. And you grow up- that's all you watch. Every time. Sometimes more esoteric like Karate Kid, sometimes so esoteric it basically circles back to exoteric like Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Then you just say they "lost aura" without understanding how that mass consciousness actually came to be.

Brits are arrested and put in jail for racism in private group chats- blame Hitler! Don't blame the past 80 years of consciously-generated culture.

He doesn't have to be the greatest evil ever for me to dislike his ideology. He just has to have been an enemy of my country and my demographic, which is trivially true for both and not explained away by Jewish cultural coding.

Brits are thrown in prison for racism in private group chats. You can't lay that at the feet of Hitler at some point we have to critically analyze how we got here. And yes film is one of the most indispensable artistic mediums for generating that consciousness.
