This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

Recruiting for a cause.

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

But it was, it was a war of choice for the allies to plonk Isreal where it currently is. And it was Isreal's choice to behave in the most inhumane way possible all the way back to the Nakba until today. The kind of shit that would get your whole country and people unprsoned in the west, I'm talking wholesale ethnic replacement of vilages with military support, civilians fired at freely by the military with full support of the command chain, and the atrocities have not stoped only brazenly continued.
They shouldn't BE THERE. They don't have a moral inch to stand, on that cliff face of acceptance.
Yes, we're aware the West is doing the "pulling the ladder up behind you" thing.
That's a perfect description of Western immigration and law enforcement policy for the last ~15ish years. And sure, let's call those things "crimes"[1]. Sure, the rapists aren't actually killing the women into whom they shoot, but their right to do that is very much backed by the military and command chain of those nations- voice disagreement, and the State's guns show up to suppress you.
Noticing this, somewhat humorously, demonstrates that both the main Western schools of thought about Israel are completely hypocritical:

Neither has a moral inch to stand on; both bear isolated demands for rigor.
Ironically, "forcibly rebuild Gaza into rich Trump resort" was arguably superior simply because the use of force was limited to pushing massive material wealth upon the colonized side- forcing the enemy's material standards of life to improve (and killing everyone who wanted their neighbor's life to remain so economically worthless that throwing it against enemy guns was the only luxury) such that any future chimp-outs would be moderated by the inherent desire not to gamble so forcefully you lose the creature comforts you now take for granted. One notes that this is more or less just how empires are stabilized (well, the successful ones, anyway- the Americans vs. the Germans/Japanese/Soviets, the Han Communists of Beijing vs. the rest of China, etc.).
[1] The framing is smuggling in both the assumption both that these things are "crimes", and that "crimes" are bad. Though, the accusation of rank hypocrisy doesn't change if they are not "crimes", or if these "crimes" are actually good.

I've made it abundantly clear that the "war" to which I referred was the recent escalation of hostilities which began in October 2023, not the broader Israel-Palestine conflict.
