So, what video games have you been playing this week?

Booted up The Legend of Zelda again. 1cced First Quest on the first try; 1cced Second Quest after about 12 tries (I'd done it before, and I did consult a list of the secret rupee locations and Letter location; I remembered all the dungeon locations and heart locations, though, and didn't look up the dungeon layouts). Second Quest is also a case of early-game hell; I think all but one or two of the failures were in the overworld before the first dungeon.

Been on-and-off trying my Morrowind challenge run (max-difficulty ironman, no exploits); I can semi-reliably get to Balmora.

Vaguely making motions in the direction of finally trying X-Com (as in, UFO: Enemy Unknown, the original) with Council funding only (via hex-editing the sell prices to 0, not via refusing to sell anything). I've decided not to try doing it ironman the first time, because I need to get used to the once-per-month funding and that means Geoscape saves. This is a stepping stone to my true goal, i.e. beating Terror from the Deep on Superhuman with Council funding only, ironman, no psi, no aborting terror sites (I've ironmanned TftD Superhuman, but I used psi to win the colony because the aliens were being uncoöperative about giving me a Calcinite and I got sick of spinning the wheels waiting for one).

Some Touhou; I try to avoid playing it because I know it's not amazingly good for me, but sometimes I play it anyway.

To incentivise more proactive play, no matter what you do, the Avatar Progress metre will always continually tick up.

I did second-guess myself while writing it. Still, no need to be rude.

I didn't intend to be rude, just to inform (I don't correct spelling on plausible mistakes, like the number disagreement "a dice" I also noticed in that post, but consistently misspelling the same word suggests actual confusion, and I don't think it would actually demonstrate care for others to let them continue being confused). If you're reading "even in British/Commonwealth English" as disdain, it's not; I use Commonwealth spelling myself (being Australian). I included that mention to ensure you didn't mistake me for an ignorant American treating Commonwealth English itself as an error (I've had such Americans try to "correct" me online on several occasions).

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
