Weekly Finance Thread - 2026-09-05

A weekly thread to discuss financial matters - from personal all the way up to global.

Ground Rules

*Remember that we're all just Internet randos. Don't bet your life savings on a hot tip from this thread.

  • Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
  • Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
  • Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Gas and diesel prices are setting records this labor day weekend.

Elevated fuel prices seem like they're here to stay, and with winter approaching, fuel oil will likely see similar price hikes. What do you expect to happen as a result of all of this?

I'm assuming the following:

  • Consumer discretionary spending will drop as that money is rerouted to fuel.
  • Prices for consumer staples will (continue to) rise due to increased costs for inputs and increased transport costs.
  • Purchase patterns for vehicles remain stable for at least another year. Fleet vehicle contracts have a lot of inertia, and individual consumers seem to think the current prices are transitory.
  • The healthcare sector may see a small slump. Heavy healthcare consumers are also frequently on a fixed income, and may defer elective care until spring.

I would not want to bet against near-term healthcare spending simply because of demographics, which is to say healthcare spending is driven by old people who either get it for free from the government, are getting extra free money from the government or are benefiting from equities.
