This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

Recruiting for a cause.

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

Oh, I was pretty careful to not suggest solutions. I don't think there are any.
The best I've ever come up with, which still isn't good enough, would be to offer large cash incentives and one-way tickets to other countries. Since the average black person costs the taxpayer something like $800k-$1.4m over their lifetime, and has a way of making more of themselves, it seems reasonable to me to offer, say, $500k over ten years to move to a receptive country. I can only imagine that many countries would be happy to set up a receiving program. They get a slice, the emigrant gets set up with citizenship and, in local terms, a small fortune, and the burden to the taxpayer works itself out over a few decades.
The best part of this solution is that it incentivizes exactly the right members of the underclass to take the deal. The ones with the ability to do better than that here, or with the foresight to realize that they'd rather be American in the long term, would stay, and that seems like a good thing to me.
Who could disagree? Totally voluntary, and it could even be dressed up in terms of reparations and helping them flee this evil and racist country.
But, I don't think it'll happen, and like I said before I think AI is about to disrupt the economy and politics so radically that I'm not even sure stuff like this will remain a major consideration.
Actually a workable solution, and I'd support raising taxes to pay for this in the short term. Perhaps the self-deportation incentives were a trial run of this.
Baby steps to let the policy gain social acceptance, then we can talk about involuntarily deporting convicted offenders.
I don't this is a viable solution unless the illegal immigration problem is solved first. If we can't stop people who've never lived in the US from staying permanently there's no way we can stop people who used to live here from coming back when the money runs out.
I meant to include that, yes, fixing immigration first is an obvious prerequisite. It makes no sense to raise taxes to emigrate one person and then let in ten more afterwards, plus spouses and family reunification who will also be a net drain on society in one generation.
