A weekly thread to discuss financial matters - from personal all the way up to global.
Ground Rules
*Remember that we're all just Internet randos. Don't bet your life savings on a hot tip from this thread.
- Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
- Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
- Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Notes -
I have finally used up a good chunk of my ISA, and put my money where my mouth has regularly been: In shares of the Vanguard S&P 500.
God knows how long I've been putting that off, it was surprisingly painless when I sat down and did it. Financial responsibility, brought to me by the resumption of dextroamphetamine.
Any advice on further diversification of my portfolio? I am not financially stressed, and I have no immediate plans on buying a house etc etc. The most likely significant financial liability in the near term would be a cheap(ish) car. I don't have to worry about providing for my family back home, at least unless things go horrendously, unimaginably wrong when it comes to their investments and holdings.
I would say I have a decent risk appetite, but I am of the opinion that the market is, in general, more efficient than I am. Thanks!
Answering your questions more directly, I might consider some global exposure, and maybe some assets that aren't directly correlated to equities. For the former, adding a fraction of VXUS might be a good call. For the latter, you probably want to talk to somebody smarter than me. People make strong arguments for gold, bonds, commodities, and cryptocurrency.

Hot damn man. I'm glad you're getting some traction.
The best time to plant a tree might be twenty years ago, but the second best time is today.
Thank you. I'm glad I did it, it was one of the most concrete examples of me failing in hard to see ways, my limited energy carefully rationed. Being able to overcome the tendency to procrastinate in some ways, while feeling utterly helpless in others.
I think that was the biggest ticket item. Compared to that, canceling a gym membership I don't use is nothing.
Thanks for the other advice! I am leery of gold or crypto, for various reasons, but general global exposure might not be the worst idea. Shame the Chinese stock market is borderline impenetrable...
