Do you have a dumb question that you're kind of embarrassed to ask in the main thread? Is there something you're just not sure about?

Is it not inevitable that these 'frontier AI labs' calling for regulation are going to get eaten alive by the half dozen big tech companies that have accountants overseeing the nerds? The business case will prevent AI risk, the market won't stay solvent long enough to present X risk.
I may not be educated, but I can sanity check. This stuff is really expensive and when the bill comes due someone who has the revenue to pay it gets the assets.
If they try to shut it down, could the board just get rid of them? Otherwise, I think you are right. Google and Meta could just hire people who don't care about alignment and pass them fairly quickly. How many weeks/months are they behind Claude and OpenAI?
I think these frontier AI labs are going to be forced to sell by the VC's whose money they're burning for research when microsoft and google are making bucca bucks and these frontier research labs still haven't figured out a way to turn a profit, and the corporate accounting team at these big tech companies will prevent frontier expansion because they don't want to pay for research. AI really is going to be a big part of the future economy, it's not a bubble- but the people who make money off of it are largely going to be the people who already make money off of software, because that's who's figuring out how to monetize it right now(and OpenAI/Claude aren't doing a good job of that), and so they're going to take control of the entire industry among themselves and drastically slow the pace of research because there's no business case in AI X-risk.
