  • Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
  • Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
  • Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

It's been a lively week in finance news, so I'm going to do a little bit of a round up here.

Anthropic Delays its IPO to November, per the Wall Street Journal.

Does anyone know the cutoff date where Anthropic can no longer use Q2 financial data? I vaguely remember mid November for that date.

On a lighter note, Hunter Biden established a meme coin. Some early investors are calling it a rug pull.

How do meme coins even work? Every time I see them, I think it's just a casino. Am I right, or is there some intrinsic value I'm missing?

Saudi Aramco halts crude oil supply to European Customers

This seems... bad. I don't want to catastrophize or wax political, but various commenters here have noted that oil is a mostly-fungible global commodity. If the European market isn't able to get their crude from the Saudis, they're going to try to get it from somewhere, and that's going to take that oil off the market. How is that going to impact consumer markets? My heating oil bill has already quadrupled.

This seems... bad.

The Mad Max series actually has a pretty well developed internal story bible detailing exactly what caused the fall of humanity. And we are following along with it pretty closely.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
