Small-Scale Question Sunday for September 20, 2026

A more serious question: have you noticed any negative behavior changes in people you know who have started taking GLP1 drugs?

2 people I've known for 20 years have gone on such drugs, and both have started displaying far more materialistic behavior than ever before. It might just be midlife freakouts, but then I realized that besides their ages, they also had GLP1 in common.

Well, they probably had to buy new clothes, and put a bunch of thought into their new look/wardrobe, because now vanity has more potential payout.

Playing up how spiritual and non-materialistic you are is either cope for not having anything (materially and figuratively) or a flex you do while also having everything (materially and figuratively).

See my reply below. It's way more than new clothing.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
