Small-Scale Question Sunday for September 20, 2026

Ironic “Small-Scale Question Sunday” question:

What happened to Sundays? Maybe I just didn’t realize this stuff when I was a kid (90’s and early 2000’s), but Sunday used to be, well, sacred. Stuff didn’t happen in Sunday, mainly because of church. As I got older, (American) football also got added to that. Between those two things, nobody would dare schedule a practice or a game or a birthday party or anything.

Now, that’s gone. Kids have games on Sunday mornings. Kids have practices. My own kid was told, when we needed to call out of one Sunday morning practice for one special church service around the holidays, that missing practice that one time would result in them sitting. Not sitting one game. Sitting for the season unless someone else got hurt or bailed. Birthday parties during football. Football during church.

Was it like this when I was a kid and I just didn’t realize it?

I think it’s the decline of two important things: expected church attendance and the single income family. Church was the dominant reason why things didn’t get scheduled on Sunday. But the two income family reduced the ability of families to participate in activities on other days — neither parent would be home before 5-6pm and by the time meals, homework and showers/baths happen, it’s time to go to bed.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
