This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

I don't know about a "significant" amount but I definitely benefited as a very mixed Latino by getting a full ride to my state college a decade ago. I would have gotten most of it paid for by scholarships anyway given I auto-qualified for scholarships based on GPA, residency, and high ACT/SAT score, but my race was worth something like $5-10k in the end. Probably the biggest effect was that the full ride convinced me to spend 4 years in college instead of 3-- I had an insane amount of AP/college credits going in so it would have been easy to drop a year, especially if I decided to single-major instead of double-major. But I figured since I had a full ride anyway I might as well make use of it.
This scholarship was a little funny though because it was for specifically mixed-race students, and that was defined broadly enough to where one of my best friends in college ended up being a white/ 1/32nd native american dude with the same scholarship. The DEI seminar we all had to take had like one lightskin black kid and a lot of white-passing kids.
Overall I think it was pretty stupid since none of us were the kind of underprivileged youth that needed a scholarship, but obviously I wasn't going to turn it down. Cash money baybay!

Interesting. I don’t think most here differentiate between Latino and Hispanic and I would think for US census bureau purposes they are the same.
I groked it and the main difference seems to be Brazil who usually are Latin but not Hispanic. But the terms are usually interchangeable.
And then Grok lists Italians/Portugal as usually no for Latinos.
Grok also said Italians/Portugal Europeans are usually No for Latino. So in pure Elizabeth Warren identification since I have an Italian surname usually no means sometimes yes. So I am Latino. And since Latino and Hispanic are usually interchangeable I should generally check yes to Hispanic for anything work or educationally related.
But my broader point is for the rightish tail of school entrance that a 4.6 multiple was what was needed to get right amount of Hispanics in?
