A weekly thread to discuss financial matters - from personal all the way up to global.
Ground Rules
- Remember that we're all just Internet randos. Don't bet your life savings on a hot tip from this thread.
- Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
- Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
- Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Notes -
There's no reason to use peanut butter when there's a series that goes back millenia using a perfectly uniform unchanging product.
Gold is inflated at a rate of 17% over the last 5 years, and at a rate of 11% over the last 25 years. Or rather, the USD has been debased at those rates. The gold is the same as it has always been.
I still remember when we had 75% deflation from 1980-2000. What a time to be alive!
Gold is obviously such an important part of the economy. We use it for lots of things like Monster cable connectors, and tooth fillings, and chains for rappers. That's why it's the ONLY thing we need to calculate inflation.
And gold won't let you down. My car from 2026 that drives itself and doesn't need gas? Just trash compared to a 1980 Chevy Impala. Good old gold is always the same.
All those economists who measure inflation are just a bunch of silly-nillys. I can measure inflation every time I go down to the rare coin shop.
Sometimes, after too much wine, I like to think about how in 30 years Elon will go out to the asteroid belt and bring down 10 quadrillion dollars worth of gold. Imagine the deflation! We'd all be so rich.

Interesting. I'm seeing a drop from $4310 to $4135 over the weekend. I guess we had 4% deflation in three days and I didn't even notice!
