Culture War Roundup for the week of October 5, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Things have gotten better, I don't disagree. And it's nice, I suppose, that the Dems have retarded candidates as a consequence of DEI. Vance, Miller, and Rubio are far smarter than any Democrat who is close to power.

But, speaking of IQ 120 people, I pretty much never meet any who aren't liberals. I hate to say it, but adjusted for race, people just get more liberal the smarter they are. Chalk it up to smart people being more socially adjusted. They usually think I'm a libtard too, because everyone is. (Of course, like me, some are crypto-conservatives).

This isn't hopeless. Asians may be more conformist than whites, but whites are still plenty conformist. That means a preference cascade can happen and a right wing viewpoint because the default like it is in China.

But as for now, no the right is not winning. You can't even tell people you voted for Trump in polite company. Seriously, you would be EVICTED from social groups for saying you voted for a person who won the popular vote.

This must depend on where you live. I don’t really know any liberals. I scare them away. Maybe you need to find new people? I would probably change cities to somewhere where you do not need to live around them.

Where would I even go to find a liberal - they are like weirdos online.

Last time I talked to a liberal was at a house party in Buenos Aires and some grad student from Europe who was living in NYC had visited to do some research project. He kept pressing me on why does the US have all these social programs. I was replying that gas stations in my rust belt hometown pay $20 an hour and anyone who can hold down a job has a solid standard of living. He kept pressing America uncaring and bad or something like that. After one more time of hearing why does America have poor people I got frustrated and just said because we have the hard r version of a naught word.

But to be honest that’s what I’ve come to the conclusion of why we have SES issues. And every SES map is basically just a high black population percent map so it was the wrong word for a liberal to here but in my honest opinion the right answer.

Probably why I don’t get invented into liberal circles but you should try it sometime. He went fairly ballistic after that haha.

The reason why IQ 120 people are liberal my guess is 2 reasons:

  1. Smart enough to be very conformists and book smart. Rule followers.

  2. IQ is hereditary so almost all of their parents are affluent and thus they grew up in segregated neighborhoods and never dealt with poor people or social dysfunction of the lower class. I grew up poor.
