This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

This is not what African Muslim converts say about how Arabs treat them. And you yourself have posted repeatedly about how you consider yourself a higher class of being than the peasants ( but still Muslim!) who fetch and carry for you at home.
And of course, if there is one group that treats Arabs more brutally than the Israelis, it's other Arabs. Let's not even get into Shia versus Sunni.
Your own attitudes bely the pretty words about a universal Ummah. It's no more true than Christians saying " We are all brothers and sisters in Christ."
Hey, converting means you don't get treated like a dhimmi anymore or as "not a real Muslim" or anything like that. The Arabs have this bad habit (they've had it for over 1200 years, the fall of the Ummayads was in big parts becuase the Arab Muslims kept treating the convert Muslims worse and it lead to serious resentment) but it's a speicifc Arab flaw, not anything to do with Islam or Muslims more genreally.
It doesn't mean that everyone is equal within the class of all Muslims. Yes, we are all equal before God, but that's because the differences between us are negligible in comparison to how Great God is (sort of like floating point precision smoothing), and not about how we're all equal as humans otherwise.
Again, a very specific Arab flaw. I'm not even a particularly big fan of Arabs personally, the Eastern ones lucked out with oil and now seem to think they rule the place, while in reality they aren't any different to Algerians or Tunisians or Libyans, some more humility from them would be very welcome.
But hey, if you're curious, your nearest mosque is probably not too far away (and only going to get closer as time goes by). There's no pressure either way.
I'm not sure that's fair; the record of countries discovering massive amounts of natural resource wealth and using it to improve the lives of their citizens seems mixed at best (Iraq, Venezuela, and Iran come immediately to mind). I think places like the UAE and Bahrain deserve some credit.
I'm interested in you saying you're not huge on Arabs though. Am I correct that this is a minority view among non-Arab Muslims? My sense was that Arabs are basically the most admired ethnic group among Muslims, being the progenitors of the religion, the Quran being written in Arabic, and so on.
Yes, for basically the reasons you mentioned there's a strong and very misguided (IMO) strand of people who basically Arab-worship. Something like Arabs are great and amazing because they were the ones who were sent God's last messenger and the word.
If anything I think this gets it the wrong way around. I think that rather the reason that out of all the peoples of Humanity Arabs were the ones sent the prophet was because they were the most degraded and in severe need of divine guidance and correction (e.g. in pre Islamic arabia when a man died his eldest son automatically got to take all the man's wives except his mother for himself, in addition to many other things that will make you go wtf when you hear about them the first time).
However this is a conversation Islamic society is not yet ready to have, so alas...

There are like multiple layers of snobbery here but yes a lot of both plebs and new money classes in places like Indonesia, Pakistan etc worship Gulf Arabs and their customs, dress, purported Islamic-ness.

As someone who has studied the Middle East and Islam, and has a working knowledge of Arabic (don't ask me to recite the Quran or anything, I have zero interest in tajweed), I will pass on your offer. I know too much about Islam. (And the Quran is shitty Bible fanfiction, second only to the Book of Mormon in transparent and low-quality mimicry, inexplicably adored by people who turn off all literary faculties to convince themselves otherwise.)
Bro, I'm far from the most Islamophobic person here, but this triumphal colonialist attitude of yours really makes me start sympathizing with the Retvrns.
