Wellness Wednesday for October 14, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

CICO is garbage advice and dieting measure, but standard and acceptable physics.

Our bodies don't measure fullness via calories, there are many ways it can adjust metabolic rate to match food intake, and it has many ways to encourage food intake if body is using more calories.

Count calories all you want (and most people don't want to spend tons of time doing that), but what you eat is gonna determine whether you feel fine and satiated or hungry and miserable. Being hungry and miserable all the time is a great way to quit a diet. So why not skip the part where you count calories, eat the right foods, and don't feel hungry and miserable all the time. That's what the non CICO diets tend to offer.

What sources of data do you think can, theoretically and practically, be brought to bear on this question? What sort of precision do you think is necessary?

What other sources of data do you think can, theoretically and practically, be brought to bear on this question? Is that literally the only one? What sort of precision do you think is necessary?

If you can't think of any others, then just say that's the only one you can think of. If you have no thoughts on what sort of precision you think is necessary, then just say that you have no thoughts on what sort of precision is necessary. Ya know, instead of wasting our time.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I don't see anything in there that describes any other sources of data that you think can, theoretically and practically, be brought to bear on this question. Nor do I see any indication of what sort of precision you think is necessary.
