Wellness Wednesday for October 14, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

Dating: How does one answer the, “what do you do for fun,” question? I’m pretty sure I can’t tell her that I like watching insane political YouTubers, following stupid internet drama, watching football, and analyzing classical music scores (or can I? I’ve never actually tried this).

It can be answered like an autist or a normie and they're both bad. The autist says "reprogramming microchips to emulate Soviet counting machines". The normie says "I like going out, and I also enjoy staying in". The first would be better phrased as something like "I love figuring out how machines work and then making them do new things they were never made to do" and the second as something like "nothing beats curling up with a new episode of Popularity Contest after I've taken my poochie-pie to brunch at the puppy parlour".

What the listener needs is a demonstration of your personality and your lifestyle, and since the question is about fun it should be relatively playful. It's a show, don't tell affair. Tone as much as content. You present it in a manner to show what appeals to you and what appeals about you. Bottom line the answer itself should be fun and personal instead of being either a dry report or an answer so general that it could describe almost anyone. The objective is to find/offer ways that you can better relate to the other person, not literalist fact-gathering or milquetoast bet-hedging.
