If you're a baseball person, who are you rooting for in the World Series?

I don't have a team (growing up hours and hours from the closest city with a team will do that), so my preference is always for the team that hasn't won before. Since neither the Brewers nor Rays have won before, I'm leaning Brewers since they've been around longer without a win. Also, I've always had an irrational soft spot for teams with names related to an industry their city used to be famous for (Brewers, Steelers, Packers, the Supersonics back when they existed, etc.). Either way, seeing two smaller payroll teams get to the Series is cool.

Game 1 was excellent. I hope the rest of the Series follows suit.

Regrettably my team went out like a bitch so I'm sulking. That said, fuck the Astros!

I was excited when they first won the Series in 2017 since they had never been, but after the sign stealing thing, I'm on Team Fuck the Astros in general.

Sports are better when you have a clear villain, so also thank you Astros!

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
