Culture War Roundup for the week of October 26, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Kid doesn’t look weird or like a “loner” to me. He looks like someone high and strung out on drugs, hanging out with the local gang. The weirdest thing I found in this article is the mother’s name is “Shauntai” (what kind of spelling is that?); and the name of the dude who took him out is “Kaylub” (what the fuck?).

When I was in high school, there was this guy in my English class who actually did look like a fairly strange kid and was weird (or more of an oddball in general). For most of the year he was delinquent and chronically absent. He just didn’t attend class. At one point for a project, he and I got paired up with each other at random and when speaking to him, he was just a fairly normal dude. Very talkative, had lots of interests and hobbies, but no one ever took the chance to really know him. I asked him once why he never seemed to be here and he replied he was bullied all the time and didn’t like it and the faculty never did anything about it. The teacher I guess confronted him in private about his absences and he gave some reason about “not being healthy;” and her response back was “your health is the least important.”

Years later I heard from a distant peer I had in school that this guy is doing really well for himself, is making it big in his line of work and things really picked up for him. He said that he told him, “Wow, you really underwent a real transformation when I last remembered you around this time…” And he said back to him that, “Nobody understood that I was a fucking school shooter in the making…,” and he was talking about his high school experience. And after I heard all this, I finally started connecting the dots. His delinquency probably saved the lives of his school bullies and likely the teacher for telling him his health wasn’t important. Unbeknownst to her, she probably got lucky and didn’t even have a clue about it.

His delinquency probably saved the lives of his school bullies and likely the teacher for telling him his health wasn’t important.

Was the fact they ultimately survived a net positive for society, though?

I get that "just let them leave" is a very effective solution (and one that we mostly outsourced to illegals and to the Chinese more generally- cheaper than employing indigenous young men, women and bullies favor that solution partially because it does that, total mystery why that would be), but that's not really one that imposes accountability on people who by all rights were themselves [social] criminals, and society suffers from that kind of social criminality remaining unaddressed just as much as it does from young men meting out the punishment for that themselves (arguably it suffers much more from the former, but in a more diffuse way).

It's not something we really have a concept for since "just let them leave" has worked so incredibly well for most of human history; there's an entire book of the Bible about supernatural justice befalling an entire nation that failed to "just let them leave".

How much the better for us would it have been had be been allowed, and had space, to start that transformation at 16 rather than 26?
