..unless the weapon has unsuspected design flaws that'd make it next to useless, and not minor reliability issues, it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Given that any weapon going into service now should be expected to have to be used to kill armored robots, and physics imposes certain constraints there, anything with substantial armor-piercing ability is good.
