I've played a few hours of Sea of Stars this week. It seems like a worthwhile game. If you're longing for a new Chrono Trigger-esque rpg, it might be right up your alley.

I'm generally not a fan of pixelated graphics though. The designs and colors are great, I just wish it wasn't blocky 16-bit stuff. It's okay when I play it on my TV and sit a few meters away, but if I had to sit right up close to a PC monitor and play it, I probably wouldn't bother with the game. I don't really understand why we can't have retro style gameplay with high-res 2d graphics. Hades did it.

The writing isn't always great for the dialogues. It's a bit embarassing at times, and it's written by someone who often doesn't know when to use a comma.

But other than that it's a cool game for what it sets out to do. The gameplay is satisfying. I love to level up and find new equipment.

Hades is cell shaded 3D with a perspective to make it look 2D. It's more work to try to do that with the higher detail sprite look.

Sea of stars is vastly overrated, Chained Echoes is superior in every way.

I've gotten into the first hour of Chained Echoes. I think they both looks pretty cool but I'm a huge sucker for pixel art nostalgia.

How so?

Lo-fi retro graphics are a cost-cutting measure. You can train a programmer to draw passable 16x32 character sprites.

I added it to my wishlist on Steam when I saw a friend had added it to his. Looked very Chrono Trigger-esque, which I liked. I'll get around to playing it at some point.
