This is a megathread for any posts on the conflict between (so far, and so far as I know) Hamas and the Israeli government, as well as related geopolitics. Culture War thread rules apply.
As a side/meta note: something really changed around 2016
I think many people have long felt this. Thanks to Elon Musk open sourcing Twitter's internal correspondence with American government agencies it became clear that it wasn't just "Eternal September" type nostalgia but a very real and coordinated change.

It really is interesting seeing how many times the "paranoid conspiracy theories" turn out to be correct in the modern day. People on 4chan were talking about twitter being compromised by the feds for years, but there are still people talking about how the verified facts of what happened are just tinfoil hat conspiracy theories, and nobody seems to update their credibility estimations as a result.

controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are

Why are you called The Motte?
A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently,
it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey",
originally identified by
philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial
but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens
this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for
the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired
propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."
On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
