Israel-Gaza Megathread #2
This is a refreshed megathread for any posts on the conflict between (so far, and so far as I know) Hamas and the Israeli government, as well as related geopolitics. Culture War thread rules apply.
How is it safe for Biden to visit Israel with a war raging next door? Like he’s got what, 100 secret service with him at a given time? Or maybe it’s even 500, I dunno. But I assume he’s not bringing tanks, mounted guns, and all that good stuff.
What is stopping like Hamas/Iran/Al Qaeda from saying “here’s our chance” and throwing everything last thing they’ve got and going after him? Is it just the host county, Israel in this case, is responsible for security, and must I assume go to great lengths with a US president in town?
We would turn Palestine into glass if they took out our POTUS.
Civis Romanus Sum - I am a Roman citizen - and all the privileges that go with it in the empire. But at an extreme level for some barbarians killing the leader of Empire.
My guess is the Saudis, Egyptians, Iranians would all come to an agreement to take on a bunch of Palestinians probably for a few favors (Saudis to be in good grace, Egypt would expect a check, Iranians probably removal of sanctions). Then a week later Gaza does not exists.
People always write diatribes about Pax Romana not existing. But if we were angered to that extent a lot of people would be very nice to keep the system going.

Why are you called The Motte?
A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently,
it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey",
originally identified by
philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial
but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens
this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for
the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired
propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."
On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
