When I heard "a U.S.-backed laboratory research program" I literally thought they were talking about the theory (conspiracy theory? I guess not any more) that Fauci helped fund GoF research at Wuhan.

I'd apply that last part to human rights lawyers who frustrate deportations -- if anyone you rescued from deportation commits a crime, you are also held responsible.

Lawyers are enforcing the rules of the game.

I know the rules are bullshit and people often deliberately frustrate the setting of the rules, but before making lawyers responsible for the crimes of the people they represent I would want to try everything else first.

If my network connection dies while composing a comment but before posting it, sometimes the page gets permanently stuck and I have to save the comment then reload the page to actually submit it.

I think the refugee framing is fine, and even more it means that the load has to be shared.

I want them to admit that despite having way more than enough wealth to handle 50 people, they don't want to,

The mainstream news coverage I saw, and the mainstream reddit posts I saw, said that MV was loving this and happily making room for them. EDIT I see that MV has since put them on buses and shipped them away at gunpoint.

I have known about this campaign to bus the illegals to the sanctuary cities for a long time, but my wife just learned about a few days ago with the MV story. She wanted me to be angry and I knew not to fall into the trap so I just said "it sounds like win-win-win: the immigrants volunteered to be put there, the receiving community says they want them, the 'donor' community says they cannot handle that many refugees."

SGG's bete noire is Jesse. If Jesse were to die tonight, heaven forbid, SGG wouldn't know what to do with their life.

In high school there were people who would rile up the mentally-challenged kids, get them to say "fuck" or go into a physical rage, which would obviously get the mentally-challenged kid in trouble with the bureaucracy. It was very funny to do and if you were bored it was funny to watch. (Some of these kids found it such a cheat code to positive attention that they failed to develop any other personality.)

Disney casting a black person to play the whitest of white characters seems to me just riling up the mentally-challenged people in order to see what they do. Kind of lame for a party who is supposed to be the master of content.

If Trace did the deed against LoTT in order to "build up credits" or something, it was a complete loss.

But they really just seem to think that getting a journalist (or person who thinks they are a journalist) to clown themselves is its own reward.

Speed chess?

This is not a theory no one ever thought about. It is very old news. It used to be phrased as "women do not ask for promotions" (which became "women do not ask for promotions and that is men's fault.")

prompting Kuttner to ask supporters to donate $68,000 to counter Kay’s “hate.”

The grifter playbook is

  1. Say stupid shit.

  2. When outgroup points it out, say "it would make our outrgroup really mad if you give me money."

but I have seldom seem it done so literally.

As of press time, the fundraiser has pulled in $226.69, $10 of which was donated by Kay himself.

Maybe the well was run dry.

It is just the left's version of Christian Movies. Quality, plot, hero's journey, none of that is as important as The Message.

It keeps on saying "public money" but what does this actually mean?

Finally I find it

Tax dollars are not supposed to go toward religious education. But public agencies pay private schools to comply with government mandates and manage social services. Hasidic boys’ yeshivas, like other private schools, access dozens of such programs, collecting money that subsidizes their theological curriculum.

The details are vague, I expect on purpose. The NYT can surely clear this up but are not so they deserve no bonus points for confusion.

It feels like the government wants to make sure kids have enough to eat, so they pay schools money to do stuff like free school breakfast. And we call this "public funding."

The schools serving the very poorest children will simultaneously have the most "public funding" as well as the worst scores.

At that point the article should never have been written.

"Risk was higher than admitted" is a thing that happens in 50% of cases, and even more often if you accept any risk or even a transient rise in the scientific data.

Why September 9 in the headline?

And it takes very little bandwidth to get the information back.

There was an incident a year or two ago in chess, probably involving one of the main parties here, where the match was being livestreamed and one player was doing moves that completely matched a popular chessbot -- right up until the livestream broke.

Figuring out how to smuggle that information into the match is a fun and interesting problem. But do not be surprised when the people running the matches decide they are sick of you.

There is a google classroom for some homework, but not everything makes it there. And studying for tests is difficult to manage. If we are fortunate enough to know ahead of time there will be a test, asking the kid what it covers or how it will be administered just gets blank looks.

I was going to say that reveddit knows enough to distinguish between "removed by user" "removed by mod" and "removed by admin."

When the child is an unreliable narrator, you could still figure out what they were studying in class by reading the textbook.

They do not have textbooks any more. How is a parent supposed to keep track?

Whoa, cool.

It is comments from all threads, which is neat. But can it be restricted to comments for one thread?

If I reload a page I last visited an hour ago, comments in the past hour are highlighted. Great.

If I reload a page twice by accident, then I missed that window, and only comments in the past few seconds are highlighted.

Can I undo that? Any way to change what the "seen since" value is?

EDIT Also, any way to step through just the "new" posts?

Iowahawk identified this pattern a while ago for "lefties" as he called them

  1. Identify a respected institution.

  2. kill it.

  3. gut it.

  4. wear its carcass as a skin suit, while demanding respect

We have another thread about extremely extended adolescence. 17-year-olds used to be mature enough by necessity to raise a family, go to war, sit on a factory job for 8 hours, work a field for 14 hours.

Overall it is probably good that our 17-year-olds do not need to do that any more. But they can still crank out babies like 17-year-olds did 300 years ago.

Young people have low earning power but punch above their weight at taking care of kids.

You still need money, so this is something an extended family (or a village in Hillary Clinton terms) can do. But I would be extremely sus about a community that deliberately keeps its young women pregnant. It leads to Warren Jeffs situations very easily.

I think there is an easy line to see between "stop entering unfair contests of your own volition" and "society is unfair" but maybe that is me.

The $3.6M number could be broadcast the same way that cigarette deaths are.
