I have heard "this President is an empty suit controlled by the real people in charge" for literally every President of my life.

Biden is the first one I actually believe it. Not completely, because he definitely did the Afghanistan withdrawal over his staff's objections.

Biden will say during press conferences that he is not allowed to answer questions, and sometimes I wonder if this is a cry for help.

I am not sure how big the contingent of "wants to use slurs" is. Certainly I do not encounter people in my right-leaning spaces wanting to use the n-word. I guess I can think of a few if I try really hard, but I mostly think of examples of them being told to control themselves. Even the f-slur gets exasperated sighs.

Or maybe you are being expansive in your use of slurs. You can get quite a bit of power by declaring other people's arguments off-limits and you can do that by calling them slurs. Twitter banned the "NPC" meme because it was dehumanizing, and reddit banned the word "groomer."

RPG.net is very good at making people uncomfortable, because say the wrong thing and you are dead, and "lol just do not say wrong things" is hard when today's wrong thing was a normal thing five years ago. Was ResetEra running "smoothly" on their old server?

It is hard enough for people to update with new information. To actually update with new information and remember they used to have the incorrect information is rare.

I absolutely thought that Kiev would fall and fall quickly. (Should I have known this based on information I had available at the time? Good question.)

A fair number of high-achieving high-school students fall apart in college, sometimes from being overwhelmed or temporary mental illness or because they no longer have their parents pushing them or because they now have the freedom to smoke dope all day (maybe those last two are the same thing).

I think the most important factor is knowing that they have to put in the work. Tell anyone they keep getting paid or keep getting the grade if they stop working and most will stop. Once they see the light in the tunnel of "do no work and still succeed" many will go for it even if the expected value is worse than studying and/or dropping the class.

The free speech group has overlap with the right these days out of a common enemy, but I have no illusions that things would change if the right grabbed control of institutions.

This is not a theory no one ever thought about. It is very old news. It used to be phrased as "women do not ask for promotions" (which became "women do not ask for promotions and that is men's fault.")

Iowahawk identified this pattern a while ago for "lefties" as he called them

  1. Identify a respected institution.

  2. kill it.

  3. gut it.

  4. wear its carcass as a skin suit, while demanding respect

they literally staked the future of their whole studio on this show

Do you think Amazon Studio will actually close? There are many more billions of dollars left to flush down the toilet.

My priors were:

  • because of the vagueness of laws, every business that actually does anything can be found to have violated some rule by an aggressive enough official

  • Trump's businesses seemed especially likely to cross both the letter and the spirit of the law so it would not be that hard to find something

And it took three years of specifically investigating Donald Trump's businesses to come up with something? This is extremely low performance.

There are lots of bogus or even downright fraudulent signatures on any signature-gathering mission. People will put bogus information on your petition to deliberately fuck with you and you cannot stop them.

Why do you think people took this third year? Weed-out classes are often done first year or second year, to give students time to switch away. (One student quoted in the article who had already taken it is described as a current junior.)

I am trying to find their course catalog online but apparently NYU has lent its brand name to more things than Trump has.

Anyone surprised that one country's security apparatus was spying on the communications of another country's leaders is not mature enough to be in any position of power. Even if the two countries are friendly.

prompting Kuttner to ask supporters to donate $68,000 to counter Kay’s “hate.”

The grifter playbook is

  1. Say stupid shit.

  2. When outgroup points it out, say "it would make our outrgroup really mad if you give me money."

but I have seldom seem it done so literally.

As of press time, the fundraiser has pulled in $226.69, $10 of which was donated by Kay himself.

Maybe the well was run dry.

Election security is very important. But if people ask if they can vote and get told they can vote, arresting them seems to not help much. This is not getting us Voter ID. It just looks like the bureaucracy telling people one day they are doing things okay and the next "lol get fukt."

It keeps on saying "public money" but what does this actually mean?

Finally I find it

Tax dollars are not supposed to go toward religious education. But public agencies pay private schools to comply with government mandates and manage social services. Hasidic boys’ yeshivas, like other private schools, access dozens of such programs, collecting money that subsidizes their theological curriculum.

The details are vague, I expect on purpose. The NYT can surely clear this up but are not so they deserve no bonus points for confusion.

It feels like the government wants to make sure kids have enough to eat, so they pay schools money to do stuff like free school breakfast. And we call this "public funding."

The schools serving the very poorest children will simultaneously have the most "public funding" as well as the worst scores.

At that point the article should never have been written.

Yes, that's the trick. You ask a person "at what price would you voluntarily part with this piece of property?"

No. You come to me with an offer and earnest money, and I decide if it is worth my time to bother listening to you based largely on the number.

It is aggravating to price everything in my life, knowing that I am fucked if I get it wrong because they are out to get me.

If someone values my home at $3 million because of the feng shui, they can offer me $2 million and keep $1 million of surplus for themselves. $2 million is more than I value my current home. Now someone is going to try "we already know you are a whore we are just negotiating on the price" to figure out exactly where below $2 million my value is and that is when I tell them to eat shit. If I have to defend my property constantly then I might as well go full ancap and blast anyone who steps on it.

the value of what they think their home/land is truly worth, with the caveat being that if someone offers to purchase at said price they are legally compelled to accept it

This is even worse. Under either the present system or full gay space communism georgism, at least I do not wake up one morning and get told I have to move out within the next month.

You are robbing the entire owner surplus here. I am sure the grocery store would like to figure out exactly how much I am willing to pay for a loaf of milk or a jar of bread, or the car salesman to figure out exactly what a car is worth to me.

There is being more economically efficient, and then there is negotiating with the swarm of AI drones outside my house exactly how much my child's life is worth to me compared to their value of him in paperclips.

I have a bunch of things in my house that I would like to sell for their market price but the transaction costs are too high to bother. That is essentially negative surplus for me. But I also own things that I value much more than their market value in cash, which is positive surplus, so it balances out. So the idea of a future where I lose the positive surplus but lose the negative surplus is extremely distressing.

Also, what are the arguments against LVT

As you say in your comment, a lot of land value assessments are completely random and depend on how much time you can spend fighting the tax collector assessor. How well the government runs property taxes is a good proxy for how well they will run land taxes.

Do you have a citation? I see no news stories, and https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/ does not have it although I admit I do not know if it normally would.

It is just the left's version of Christian Movies. Quality, plot, hero's journey, none of that is as important as The Message.

The ball was moved from "torturing people for information" to "torturing random people for random facts."

We can decide "we will not torture even though it works." That is a principle.

"We do not torture it does not work anyway" is a Just World Fallacy.

Without growth, there is a fixed pie. Anyone else's gain is your loss. It becomes extremely important that you protect what you got, because once someone else has it, they are going to fight like a cornered rat to keep it.

A society without growth might be possible, in the sense that it would not violate the law of gravity. But anyone who thinks they can pull it off and be in charge is already too dumb to actually achieve it, and they will start destroying people about 5 minutes in.

I think "free speech absolutists" are noticeably different from "right-wing posters," even if they feel some common ground these days.

Short version of my theory:

  • Fixed mindset is what is true.

  • But people who believe in growth mindset actually work to their fullest potential instead of sitting on their ass.

I am very uncomfortable with The Noble Lie but telling someone that they are just going to end up wherever mother nature decides is robbing them of something big.
