Mixing quotes and periods is one of those things that always confused me about writing.

Why not just move to the countryside? You don't have to live next to a college campus.

Late to the party here, but I would ask you: would you rather live in a world where everyone is 100% self-interested or one where most people have some level of concern for others? The thing is, if you prefer the latter then you kind of have to have the same concern. I mean that's not entirely true, you could potentially "leech" off the concerned-for-others society but if there are too many leeches then the general level-of-concern people have for others will drop.

Take the subway as an example. Would you rather ride on a subway where people were generally courteous or completely self-interested? For example would you prefer a subway where riders immediately rush to the nearest seat and put their bag down so others can't sit next to them? Or would you prefer one where people more courteously figure out who sits where? Would you prefer a subway where everyone plays loud music on their phone with no headphones or one where people use headphones and quietly go about their business?

I love watching the Primitive Technology videos on youtube, where half the videos are about bootstrapping your own pottery kiln.

Is it just seen as low status in India? I know my wife laughed at me a bit when I said I was interested in taking a pottery class, because that's something only people making poverty level wages do in her home country.

This doesn't really make sense an an explanation. First, Americans tend to have more disposable income than Europeans to begin with. Secondly, tickets for the sporting events, EDM concerts and other low brow media are even more expensive, yet extremely popular.

I'm gonna say: you're unlikely to survive and if you survive you're unlikely to be any more attractive.

I would say no because EMH assumes actors that are capable of efficiently reacting to market information instantly, when in reality people take time to reach decisions and are prone to errors in logic, for example over- or under-reacting to information.

The EMH would make it impossible to be a successful trader long-term whereas I believe these people do exist even if most day traders fail.

That said, I think the market tends to be more efficient than most individuals, which is why most day traders fail and most money managers don't beat the market long-term. It seems to take a lot of PhDs and a lot of investment to beat the market long-term (e.g. Renaissance Technologies).

It's not an irreversible decision. Try it out and if you don't like it, go somewhere else.

You're lumping all religion together. Sure , people have had various mutually exclusive belief systems since the beginning of history. If you want us to buy into Roman Catholicism, then you have to argue that its specific god is the one god that actually exists, as opposed to say Zeus and the Roman Pantheon.

How many religious people constantly question whether there is a God? It seems like either way, people come to a conclusion and follow it. Also, the religious person typically only learns about one religion, a tiny fraction of all the different religious beliefs that people have held since humans existed.

Thanks. First I was afraid of teleportation, now I'm afraid of falling asleep!

Its my understanding that certain black immigrant groups like Nigerians are highly successful, on par with Asians and Jews. So, its not surprising they would be overrepresented. I would sat this is actually semi-good as it means Harvard is at least treating black applicants internally-meritocratically even while discriminating against other racial groups.

So I don't think I would agree with any of the premises.

  1. I may not select my friends based only on their race, but I don't have an obligation to not racially select friends. It seems to me that in general, people have an unconscious desire to be around people like themselves which would lead them to some racially-influenced selection. So, it's not clear to me it's even possible to be colorblind.

  2. Friends and romantic partners are obviously very different relationships, so of course different criteria would apply.

  3. I would argue being obligated to sleep with someone you aren't attracted to falls under "unreasonably extreme cost to oneself". In fact, even being forced into friendship with someone because of their race is an unreasonable extreme cost.

An obvious counter to that would be to swap incel for old man. Birth date is about as immutable as it gets.
