leading in particular to a symbolic minimization of Africa in collective imaginations and knowledge systems
Yes, because placing Africa centrally in the most common default maps was a conspiracy to minimize the importance of Africa.
Edit: I realize I should probably have made a clearer point. I am aware of the general argument for why the African Union is arguing for an equal-area projection to be "encouraged." I do not find it convincing that area is the only factor in visual prominence, or that area alone should be the only factor for determining if a map introduces undesirable bias or will promote justice. I seriously think the map being aesthetic is more important, and that quantitative comparisons have better forms. I also think developed-country elementary school classrooms can afford and should have a globe available. Preferably a planimetric globe that can be dismounted from its stand and rotated freely to examine.
I see no reason why how big something looks should be more important to visually understanding a map than border and coastline length, relative position, shape, direction, or visual centrality.
Kavrayskiy VII is the best compromise projection
Yes, Comrade Kavrayskiy VII is clearly the most principled compromise projection. Winkel tripel and the National Geographic Society are bourgeois nonsense.
I was going to come in here and make a nostalgia argument for a Winkel tripel, but Kavrayskiy VII is clearly more aesthetic, which, re: the original discussion, is the most important property for all these maps. It doesn't make sense to me why area should be the key ontological factor for deciding which map is best. In the modern era, no one is cutting out sections of map to weigh them, or measuring border lengths with a string, or trying to find the rhumb line with a ruler; at least not for serious work and not from a random UN report. If you want to compare areas, clearly a bar chart or a table would be better.
A few days ago I admitted my hip injury from moving in march wasn't going to go away on its own so I am doing some exercises which seem to be helping
What exercises do you like for weird hip stuff? Like your standard Cossack squat, clamshell, fire-hydrant circles type of thing; or did you dig up something more exotic?
I'll let @thejdizzler comment on his training for himself. But don't discount his elite level dedication to diet.
Yeah, I thought your initial usage was fine. I mostly wasn't sure everyone reading the thread below would realize the technical distinction. I guess maybe "serviceman" doesn't give land-army vibes? I thought the nautical aspect of the ship being full of seamen was important to the point you were making.
Do people really say "sailor" in a modern context to refer to a merchant mariner?
5k soldiers who haven’t been off a boat for 9 months
I hate to be that guy, but I see "soldiers" is getting replicated down-thread. Technically, U.S. Navy personnel are sailors. There is a special type of derangement that can only be created by confining 20-something men to a box for months on end. Thus, the Village People:
In the Navy [is] where can you find pleasure.
Some might have an objection to calling an aircraft carrier a boat rather than a ship. But I would guess "I'm on a Boat" has played many thousands of times aboard the Lincoln, so who am I to object?
(What's D1? Google and DeepSeek fail me.
Judging from the context:
D1 escort from UC Berkeley or OSU
I'm going to guess it's a double-ish meaning.
- Most selective or elite top division of a given form of labor, e.g., highest division of intercollegiate athletics: NCAA Division I.
- Literally, the very attractive women you see immediately attached to top-level athletes recruited to top football program schools, where there is some implication that the women were "supplied" at some level as part of a recruiting package. Especially pre-NIL money. Presumably, that supply can also be directed at other sources of demand in adjacent industry.
Edit: I see I should have refreshed first. Yeah, that is also an implication I was thinking of but failed to mention, and is a real thing.
@daezor already gave you the formalism. But yes, the gaps typically go up as ln(n). Also if you prefer: the musical explanation. Same paper that got TT working on it.
I am slightly disturbed by how carefully you've thought this through, but I applaud your diligence.
I'm giving a 70% chance that the absurdity of picking a technically correct but ludicrously non-salient option was intentional.
Odom in Nevada. Dave, 54, recently divorced, sudden passion for Thai temples. Or an unusual fascination with the canals of Amsterdam. All seem like more obvious choices.
It's Jane Austen for boys.
I ended up unironically reading Austen after, because I couldn't find anything else to fill the hole it left. Makes a lot more sense once you are used to the social norms from Aubrey-Maturin.
Did you include 21, The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey, in your circumnavigation? I like that it ends unfinished, like the series can just keep sailing, with our heroes continuing their never-ending adventures. Though I know some people prefer a sense of finality with an "ending" from Blue at the Mizzen.
The Letter of Marque, instalment 12?
I think yes, 12. Though The Golden Ocean and The Unknown Shore are both worth reading at some point, they are not part of the Aubrey-Maturin universe.
I recommend setting aside a decent block to read the next five novels as a reasonably tightly woven block, which The Letter of Marque sets the stage for. Though, as @CertainlyWorse says, it's not the first of the continuing voyages of Aubrey and Maturin.
slope of 1/2; see opinion for photos
Is that embankment a man-made property transition? Is that even up to municipal code? I would have thought anything steeper than 5:2 would require stabilization or an engineering analysis. There's literally a slide going down the side.
I could probably keep it in my car.
Yeah, that's the con-ops I had in mind. Unfortunately, it looks like the single-serve pack is out of stock, but the big bags keep fine if they are dry. Shaker bottles are sufficiently cheap that you can keep a couple of spares with the powder. DO NOT let a used shaker fester for prolonged periods in the car after use.
What separates it
Technically, it's a meal substitute rather than a protein supplement. Again, not really endorsed, but it's nutritionally complete enough that you can probably survive on it indefinitely without a critical nutritional deficiency showing up. Do not do this if you are not used to the fiber load. If you are using it as intended, as an on-the-go replacement/desperation food, I think the Black Edition macros are slightly preferable for feeling "healthy." Original is marginally cheaper and tastes better, but the macros are not amazing if you are already eating a bunch of carb/fat-heavy convenience foods.
If you can tolerate the taste and texture, and are price-insensitive, I maintain that Huel Black isn't a bad option. I find a brand-name BlenderBottle works better than the one they "give you" with your first order. A real blender or stick blender better than either, but not as on-the-go friendly. You probably want to chew something at some point, and I wouldn't recommend it being your primary "food" for enjoyment of eating. But if you don't have time, it can sustain you essentially indefinitely, as far as I can tell.
Could be, or you're not breathing "under it" enough. Or you're wearing it too low and it's acting like a hinge. Or it's a mobility problem, and you have excessive butt wink in the hole. Hard to say without looking at it in person.
I hate to endorse it because I think the term is poorly defined, but training "core" really can help your squat and deadlift. I know the force curve is backward, and some people hate it, but I like the reverse hyper. GHD or Roman chair isn't bad. Dragon flags and hanging leg raises are my preferred options for the other side.
The last two times I did squats, my lower back gave me hell that night.
Do you use a belt? Don't forget the third rule of strength training:
- If something hurts from what you are doing, don't question your form; hold your body together with bits of supportive equipment.
I see @ratherblather already suggested hack squats. Belt squats can also be good, especially if you have back pain. As long as you can find one where the range of motion is not ass.
which claims that an early-20s body combined with a teen face is the ideal male fantasy.
To quote a famous philosopher:
They want ...
And a fat ass with a baby face
They want it all
– Taylor Swift, Wi$h Li$t
I thought you had posted a different article or I had misremembered the contents based on:
don't need that much protein unless you're 230 lbs.
But from the article:
A protein intake of around 2g/kg (0.9g/lb) is required to maximize gains for men, on average.
Which would only put him at 185 lbs? Which is not ultra huge for a normal height man.
Am I missing something? Personally, especially on a bulk, I don't see a downside of just using 1g/lb for the simplicity. Whey isolate is dirt cheap, for anyone who is reasonably taking macros this seriously.
From the same article:
If we split the difference, the old “1g/lb” rule actually seems to match the research quite well.
wire nut
Wire nuts-style devices are not meant for applications under continuous vibration. The "correct" way to splice wires like this is a ratcheting crimp or soldered Western Union splice, both preferably finished with adhesive-lined heat shrink to provide mechanical strain relief.
Man, we are going to be accused of becoming the Makita shill forum. But yeah, you are getting almost exactly the same efficiency as me. Assuming you mean two 18V 5Ah batteries in series, which IMO is 36V 5Ah. I have the smaller, less fancy Makita mower.
The only problem with the Makita LXT 18V X2 (36V) system is that the specification for the pack sizes in the X2 configuration technically prevents them from going up from 5S2P 18650 cells. Do at your own risk, but if anyone is wondering, those very slightly over-max-dimension aftermarket 5S2P 21700 housings do fit (at least the mowers). I think the 5S3P packs might fit, but seems like overkill and crazy weight. Plus, you probably need to spot-weld copper for that kind of amperage. If you go for custom battery pack, be sure get one with a high-quality BMS. You can now get 5 Ah 21700 cells for 10 Ah per 18 V pack. Which is more capacity than I have in mine. And will last way, way longer than I can mow for in one go.
P.S. Those modified PowerWheels are sick. I need to have a kid, just to justify buying one.
Wow, they don't even have temporary service to your site? Maybe it's a NJ thing they can't drop a temp pole. No wonder the contractor is behind schedule, he's working in the dark!

In the interest of justice, we should really be lobbying for Auckland to be centered on the map.
