By and large, progressive intellectuals and activists are not interested in being permanent rebels, they want to be the people making decisions at the end of the day.
That's where next generation of rebels come in. You can't have a permanent revolution changing things toward the ideal society if you let one generation think it got it exactly right.
It's the struggle that matters - that's the only thing.
I don't need to mention that where humans cannot expect compassion, the fate of man's best friend is not at all uncertain.

Americans really have no idea how bad things were in densely populated civilized regions re: hunger. Allegedly, there were no rodent problems in 19th century China, just like there weren't any in Japanese POW camps, but I'm not completely sure about that.
What does it mean, for an entire nation of them to become the dominant power on the planet?
They're not particularly combative or expansionist. Historical record suggests they'll leave you alone if you'll show then some respect and maybe tribute.
Being racist and aware their system depends on their own racial characteristics, they don't seem keen to foist it on other people, unlike liberal imperalists. Whether their communist legacy will override this insular, non-missionary tendency once they're the unquestionably the most powerful country and recognized as such - I don't know.
Personally, I'd like to fuck off from this planet into deep space as soon as it becomes possible, purely on risk reduction grounds. Hacking your brain to see airless frigid voids as comfy as misty forests is much easier than surviving whatever artificial life monstrosities will arise on this planet.

We offered anyone who wanted to join the west the option to join the west. Many chose that because well the west is better.
Russia wanted to join NATO, but was rebuffed. So, that's not really true.
According to people into geopolitics, US cannot stand the idea of EU and Russia being on friendly terms, because the combined industrial and resource bases would be a threat to America.
Not sure why they're worrying seeing as there's China, but hey, maybe they live in the past.

I'm basing that claim on the estimates of amputees being 25-50k according to press quoting charities, and the amputee/KIA ratio being certainly somewhere between 6 (GWOT) to cca 30 (WW1).

They don't. Unless you're talking highly selected tiny populations of foreign strivers in certain countries.
For example, Britain, home to a modest but non-negligible amount of West Indian immigrants:

BAME stands for "black and middle eastern", however, middle eastern is just 15-20% of the BAME grouping, which based on that demographic data makes up 10% of London inhabitants.
I'm fairly sure the homicide numbers would be similar, as I remember looking them up and finding out they were almost identical to the American ones. It's worth noting that the document link says something about how pure conviction data are misleading, and it was clearly too much work to adjust them for demographics.
This was sarcasm, I'm sure the report writers, no doubt a committee, chose to omit the most damning statistics, and just left us with traces, such as the robbery and knife crime, as to avoid getting in trouble.

It's still in beta though, so, sometimes it misses.
I suspect YCombinator has already funded some bright young founder who wants to 'disrupt porn' and make the world better by eliminating exploitation of women by unscrupulous porn industry or something along those lines..

My heart bleeds for Apple users. Every time I am forced to use an Iphone - which is every time my boomer doctor father has some problem he can't figure out, I feel like screaming. It's like if someone took an Android phone and lobotomized it.
First time a few years back I found myself in utter disbelief when told the Iphone does not have a file system. There's no simple way for apps to share files.
Why people pay for these abominations is quite unclear. Fashion ? Don't know any better ?

Things have been mostly decaying since the Apartheid gov't fell. Government is now saying it has "no duty" to ensure reliable power.
Afrikaners mostly have a plan that involves evacuating to Cape Province, and declaring independence there together with the locals. There's already 60% support. (in Cape, for Cape independence)
It's the only part of SA that kind of works because it's only 20% black, has the most whites iirc and coloreds in SA are less bad at governance than blacks.

I recently watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and can concur with the other reports herein(I'm sure there were, if my memory's not playing tricks on me) that it's excellent and worth watching.
Strong recommend to everyone apart from
-people suffering from epilepsy due to flashing lights. I think there's even a warning.
-people who are likely to suffer unduly from a significant emotional event. (if you're depressed or always kinda fragile)
-people who are notably squeamish. The show really doesn't pull its punches when it comes to violence. It's not that frequent but it's there and it is very memorable.
The show's mostly a fairly straightforward tragedy/romance story set in a cyberpunk brazilified California which doesn't have as many homeless schizos as the real one but South African crime levels and also apparently in 2077 degens now use some cyber-fleshlights in public and cops don't care if it's not in a rich area.
The story is solid, the characters relatable, the environmental design & aesthetics excellent. The outcome is basically preordained from the start due to hubris
and setting. The ending is the subject of many memes which are really kinda true. I've a hard time imagining a person who could finish it and not shed at least a solitary tear.
It's also notable how on twitter people liked it and there is no seeming political category that doesn't have people liking it. If something is beloved both by trans they/them socialists and e.g. hard right Pinochet appreciators, it is kind of special.
EDIT:
Finally found someone who hates it. My dad refused to watch more than three episodes. Said something along the lines "it's too violent, the animation is bad and cyberpunk is cringe BS". I suspect it's partly bc he's notably squeamish about violence, and partly bc he's a pussy -he loses his nerve very easily in even mildly dramatic situations.
Mind you, he watches weird anime all the time and has watched entire series of such BS as e.g. Lucifer.

The complaint he has about Asians at Harvard seems somewhat valid. If there's a large tendency among them to just go for a comfy upper-middle class professional lifestyle, than these people have no business being at an elite school, if 'elite' is to have any meaning. Harvard should probably select people in a different way. 100% there are way you can figure out who has leader potential and who hasn't.
It means they should be at 2nd tier schools which can adequately prepare them for their careers, and leave places for the real elite - intelligent, ambitious, ruthless people for others who are a better fit.

I largely agree, though I don't think this is what fuel gangs. Japan has no gang problem, neither does western Europe where non-immigrant men who have checked out exist in large but not overwhelming numbers too.

Nuclear weapons really obviate the need for giant militaries for defense.
And with solid drone industry, air defense and artillery, you could probably get around the whole problem of 'not enough young male cannon fodder' anyway. Older men can operate recon drones and man artillery just as well as younger men.

The inflation due to the Ukraine war was pretty brutal. Milk went up 50%. Eggs. Vegetables, etc.
The only thing that stayed low is pork, not sure why.
My favorite 'progress' metric is the decline of child mortality. Sure, saves a lot of grief.
On the other hand, according to Kondrashov, the only person to ever seriously study relaxation of natural selection experimentally, we're in for very nasty issues down the road. And not that far down.
One can see us getting there if we get 'aligned' AI and 'rules based international order' doesn't die succeeds in destroying the Han state and corrupting other civilization-states.
Overall, sure, there's progress in technology and some parts of science. However:
there's also a profound decline ongoing, with vast swathes of population unwilling to even breed, an increase in violence, a decline in the quality of political speech, decline in social trust, brutal increases in time it takes to complete building projects, absurd costs, etc.
In America and partly in UK, this is coupled with a lack of will to police the lumpen classes, to police property crime, and so on.
This is all obvious decline from the first decades of the last century.
In addition, the only people who seem to exhibit some sort of 'will-to-power' are the radical left, who have insane aims (equity) and insane policies (like depolicing, end of meritocracy, etc)
Everyone else seems lost and floundering.
