I find this funny:
“form of prejudice and discrimination in which individuals of the same race receive benefits or disadvantages based on their skin tone.”
You actually aren’t the same race if your skin tones differ. That’s a defining feature of race.
I’m not even sure what we are trying to do with Hispanic AA. It’s not a race. It’s not a population we did slavery to no debt owed to them. I guess whenever they did the first census they saw a group slightly different (I’m guessing Chicanos in California) and wanted a way to define them.
The equivalent to America doing affirmative action for Hispanics would be if Mexico did Affirmative Action for Americans. The people benefitting would be basically George Bush types (equivalent of Ted Cruz).
I’m still a little bit stuck on the 4.6x benefit to get equal representation since a large % of how this group is defined is just white people.
Interesting. I don’t think most here differentiate between Latino and Hispanic and I would think for US census bureau purposes they are the same.
I groked it and the main difference seems to be Brazil who usually are Latin but not Hispanic. But the terms are usually interchangeable.
And then Grok lists Italians/Portugal as usually no for Latinos.
Grok also said Italians/Portugal Europeans are usually No for Latino. So in pure Elizabeth Warren identification since I have an Italian surname usually no means sometimes yes. So I am Latino. And since Latino and Hispanic are usually interchangeable I should generally check yes to Hispanic for anything work or educationally related.
But my broader point is for the rightish tail of school entrance that a 4.6 multiple was what was needed to get right amount of Hispanics in?
That’s sort of my point. There are lots of ways to boost Hispanic and just take in white guys. Why is the Hispanic bump 4.6. Just feels high to me.
America adopted Hispanic as a racial category. The Indian-Black-White games are very strong in the native cultures. Just like America only counts Indian but they have their internal caste.
Harvard is famous for not admitting many ADOS and filling their class with foreign Africans. They probably do the same with Hispanics and fill their class with a bunch of rich white guys from S America.
I am mostly interested in the right-tail of our education system. And a 4.6 factor of more likely to be accepted feels high to me. Med schools are fairly right tail. Maybe not fully top 1% but up there.
Jews count as white and represent historically something like 40% of Nobels despite a small population. So that boost the listed white population but not to justify a 4.6 number. The other thing I come up with is most white hispanics are from Spain which is outside of what’s considered the highest quality hbd but not all. To lower the number though Europeans largely do not go to American schools but Latin America many do. So there is a large population to choose from of foreigners that count as Hispanic.
When we were doing the thing where a good school had to have identical percentages of American demographics a 4.6 benefit for Hispanics just feels high to me for right tail IQ education.
This feels like more of a dumb question but why did we have any significant amount of affirmative action for Hispanics in the US?
Thought about it on this tweet on DEI at a UC med school
There are a lot of white hispanics. I would have assumed they could have just picked off to fill their classes with University of Michigan quality white hispanics. Basically Rubio, Cruz, Fernando Mendoza types. And they all for demographic purposes qualify as Hispanic. And you could find a bunch of German Brazilians or Mexican Jews if you needed to. Is the needing to take students that will show a legitimate achievement gap primarily cultural?
The article says the school was 4.6 times more likely to admit a Hispanic student than a white student. I would have assumed that ratio would have been a lot smaller. Is the American hispanic population just a lot browner?
If my brokerage account was connected to these things I would be placing some bets. But don’t really feel like transferring money and signing up for these sites.
I wish I had a better idea of the market participants because these things do vibe to me that they have a left bias. It wouldn’t shock me if Soros or sometime places these bets to boost Dem turnouts on hope of winning.
Honestly I really like betting on gop at current odds. Dems don’t have a coherent leadership/voting base to propose actual policy changes than a veto vote on Trump. And it seems like prediction markets always lean anti-right for last decade. So there has been alpha voting on right. I guess my theory would be prediction market early users leaned significantly Dem. And I have no faith in polling since picking up the phone died.
Your definition seems fair enough to me. Though I think a city can have a zone that’s urban even if most of the city is car.
Chicago is a bit odd because the City has a large amount of land within its zone. It’s a big reason why its per capita murder rate isn’t that high but it has a few neighborhoods with crazy amount of murder. It urban core is quite big where you can walk to work, church, Whole Foods, theatre and job within a 20 min walk. That’s probably about 10 sq mile zone.
Someone gave a tool for estimating population size. Brickell you can do that. The Miami zone it says is 200k people which feels smaller than the people I think live there. I threw out 500k for the size of the zone and would agree Miami is small for that. Miami is a little light on employers if your not Spanish speaking but it’s definitely possible to work at Citadel and have a full social life and never do anything farther than a 20 min walk.
When I’ve visited sun belt cities I can’t remember any full walkable neighborhoods. NYC is probably the only city that is entirely city. I think half a dozen perhaps a few more have a core of 200k-1m that fits the definition.
As far as I know Houston, Phoenix, and Dallas have zero car free neighborhoods and I tend to think LA is fairly limited.
Yes but I’m not using your definition. I haven’t been to LA for a while but when I was in LA I spent all my time in Ubers. Now I didn’t see the whole city but I don’t think there was an area I could walk 3 miles and the entire area can be lived in carless.
Miami has a region like that now. That’s true urbanism. Even if the entire Miami metropolitan area is lower density.
What are the actual cities in America? It doesn’t need to be the entire city but that you would classify as having a significant sized zone that can be car free?
NYC, Chicago, Miami that I know of. LA I want to say No to. Seattle, Boston, and San Francisco I haven’t spent much time in.
My definition would be a minimum walking zone of 500k. I kind of want to exclude any area that is purely ethnic enclave.
Crazy policies like this sometimes make it very good to invest in the exact industry affected. Oil has long been like this where GOP lets them drill more and Dems less but the restriction on the supply side of a commodity makes the price go up and unlimited drilling often leads to bankruptcy.
Some would call this rent seeking. Real estate often has the same characteristic where you want supply limited.
I don’t believe in the ADA or lot of federal regulations anyway. As far as school goes I definitely think it’s most important the smarter kids get the training they need.
That being said atleast for these NYC schools they seem to be spending 50k a year so I would expect they can do both.
The middle class flyover area I grew up in had far less funding and had no problem complying with special ed requirements and having 20 AP courses.
IMO I actually opposing segregating schools based on intelligence. I think it’s better for everyone to be in the same school. You can still have AP classes etc for high performers.
I think flyover America ran there schools this way since they lacked density for segregating by ability. Plus the initial filter for my grand daddy moved to Iowa to be a farmer wasn’t a strong filter for IQ.
This is the big issue with not segregating “ running wild, chasing, hitting and pushing each other”
School can turn into a prison for smart kids when it’s violent. I don’t think the flyover schools had the same amount of antisocial behavior. That needs fixed or you need to segregate.
I’m lost to your point.
Obviously it is harder to have anti-immigration policies in a Democracy when you have a large foreign ethnic block. They will vote against you.
I do agree it’s largely an own goal at this point. But policy errors do happen and my point is when you change who votes it now becomes harder to correct a policy mistake.
We will disagree on it being “a good thing”. But what is significant is it’s not a mean reverting situation with this level of migration. Ethnic German vote share could surge to 80% AFD in a decade or two but the non-German population would vote anything but AFD and block any reform. As the share of ethnic German vote shares shrinks it becomes harder to correct policy. There is not corrective measure outside of basically a military dictatorship.
It’s post-woke up time. And it’s slowly being realized that the problem isn’t the resources but the students. Which eventually leads you to conclude these issues are not fixable.
On the AFD rising in popularity I said below that 20 years ago I thought the west could go to Afghanistan and create America. Now I worry that Afghanistan came to America and it’s the west that needs saved. This is the same situation but at the lower local government level.
Foreign Nationals are allowed to vote? Something feels quite wrong to lose the ability to control the destiny of your people in such a short time period.
It’s amazing how far many of us have gone since only 20 years ago and believing we could Democratize the world to now I would not consider myself a believer of Democracy in Germany because of the simply fact that ethnic Germans in half a generation lost the ability to control their own politics.
I don’t think we have ever agreed before but I posted the same thing below. Kraft though did privately fund the stadium or atleast mostly.
I don’t think the SC has ever had a great test case on free speech in stadiums. Macklemore was apparently banned from other venues too. I would love to see a test case here if he sues.
Have they ever done a mass unbanning? I haven’t tried to see if I could create an account and quit using it. I thought the Reddit IPO would get management to figure out how to boost usage.
I have long thought that stadiums and arenas are essentially government and free speech rights need to apply there. Krafts venue is the only venue that was 100% paid for with private money. So in this case I think he gets to tell Macklemore he can’t come.
Most stadium deals are something like the government spends 1 gazillion dollars building it and then leases it to the local sports team for $1 a year. To me this is government funded and hence government and speech can’t be restricted.
Now most cases where they’ve banned someone from a stadium it’s because a fan said some asshole thing to a player. And the banning have been mostly for being obnoxious versus any kind of actual purpose of free speech. But stadium deals are also obnoxious to taxpayers so I am down with limiting teams rights in their stadiums since they took taxpayer money.
I don’t believe anyone is a free speech absolutists. I hope my interests and Jewish interests align more so they limit the speech of my adversaries.
Weed firms I am getting vibes are cheap. That never felt like a good business to me with little moat and not much branding. But vibes I’m getting is it’s cheaper to buy say a weed farm in public markets today than it would be to build my own equivalent weed farm. So they probably work. I never got the bubble in weed stocks because I always thought it a no moat type business.
Also like snap. Not sure if I can see 5x as I think the research reports saying that assume monetization at closer to meta levels but most users are teenagers with less disposable income than metas adult users. Actually surprised that company still exists because I know no one that uses it but the revenue is real and cheapish especially if the ran it to maximize profits instead of growth.
Exited Snap a while above 6. I don’t have conviction on anything right now. But have been buying Snap 5.2-5.5 and selling 5.6-5.8 because it does have decent vol. somehow I messed up an order and got short 2k shares at 5.75 which scares me a little and thought about just taking a small loss on it.
We need a better word for Latinos. Or no word and revert to Indian, Black, White. With some obvious complexity.
Florida Latinos have higher educational achievement and far lower support for welfare. They are a completely different population group than Texas/California Latinos. And Texas Latinos do seem sometimes very similar and some times very different than Cali Latinos.
A better demographic classification system would improve people’s models of society and immigration a lot.

I’ve lived in all those places. That’s not urbanism. You said it in your words “entertainment district”. That’s a place you drive to and then have shops and restaurants you can walk around.
Urbanism or the way I am using it is when everything you could want in life is a 20 min walk. Your condo, your office, bars, restaurants, shopping, grocery store, sporting events/theatre, and your church.
I just google Houston again (where I have lived) and within the 610 I see nothing but single family homes. I think I’m trying to use “full walkable” instead of “walkable” this way to differentiate between a place where the entire life is walkable versus an entertainment district.
