Does Hollywood imagine there are actually these sort of right wing terror cells just waiting to activate? Despite all evidence to the contrary and dozens if not hundreds of other instances of racial and political violence perpetrated against white people? Or is the goal to get boomers all worked up about dangerous right wing ideologies. Are they stupid or liars?
The number 1 rule of Hollywood is that they will never show an accurate representation of who is actually commiting crime/terrorism and who the victims are. Just look at decades of Law and Order and the defendants they showed.
Related, notice how the news media can carefully manage to never mention who is actually disproportionately committing violence against trans prostitutes, or causing so many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, or engaging in sex trafficking of minors. Somehow, all those problems are caused by SocietyTM (aka white people) instead of the perpetrators commiting the crimes.
Maybe I've been in Japan too long where the service is almost always exemplary.
I would have to rack my memory to recall any exemplary service I've gotten. Generally the best one can hope for is pleasant and competent enough. Often it's insufferable or incompetent.
I'm sure there are much worse man-made horrors on the internet now (that I'm able to avoid because I only use about 6 websites and no social media), but like you I've done a remarkable job of avoiding the older internet horrors that were commonplace prior to 2015 or so.
Didn’t include baseball because I think baseball players have personalities I can’t imagine.
Per a friend who worked for a major league team, many baseball players are the biggest meatheads you can ever imagine. Absolutely zero going on upstairs besides "see the ball, hit the ball. see the ball, catch the ball. catch the ball, throw the ball." I assume that's less applicable to pitchers and catchers, but I don't find it a stretch to believe about a bunch of the others.
I don't think "2 girls 1 porcelain bowl" would be appropriate for the Motte, even the Friday Fun Thread.
Continuing with fun stuff I've found on The Midnight Special channel on YT: the band Sparks. I had never heard of them before seeing these videos, but apparently they're having a bit of a resurgence lately thanks to a documentary (they're still around and playing shows). They were doing New Wave long before New Wave (or even punk) was a thing--these videos are from November 1974. The singer's range is impressive, and he apparently learned to sing that way to be able to sing in the keys that the keyboard-playing brother would write in, as he would refuse to change the key to make it easier to sing. Some fun, high-energy performances:
- Amateur Hour
- This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us
- Talent is an Asset (a song about Albert Einstein as told from the POV of his family)
- Here in Heaven
The "free to leave" analysis for whether it was a detention seems awfully hard to square with Florida v. Bostick and United States v. Drayton. A state is free to have stronger protections under the state constitution than the federal one, but a judicial opinion has to make it explicit that the court is relying on the state constitution rather than the federal one per Michigan v. Long, and I don't see the court specifically relying on the Penn. state constitution in that decision (but I didn't check all the cited decisions, so perhaps those do).
That case would be a solid loser for the defense in my state. I have, in fact, lost motions to suppress on very similar fact patterns, and I'm far from the only one (so it's not simply my incompetence).
I think you mean 34 years ago.
With the caveat that CoC tends to be old-school "we want infinite immigration to keep costs down so big line go up forever" Republicans while NSSF or the local gun store are more likely to be pro-Trump/anti-immigration types.
I live in the middle of nowhere in Trump country, and I often see 1-2 people in masks at the grocery store (flimsies or homemades, not (K)N-95 masks). I occasionally see people driving solo in their car wearing one.
If someone said they were writing a parody of leftist spaces and presented that article to me, I'd tell them to tone it down because it was too over the top. That bit about Lady Gaga is a real chef's kiss to the whole thing.
my car, ... how I get from place to place, upkeep, roads, fuel,
This is the ideal conversation with any older guy who is worth talking to. It's great to shoot the shit about which back highways they've traveled, what conditions were like, what car they were driving, good view points along the way, noteworthy diners or gas stations, cool small towns, etc. This applies double to anyone who has done significant off-road driving. I'd much rather talk about all that than be subjected to the latest talking points from CNN/Fox/FB.
Where do I go to cash in these "principled free thinker" points or claim my elevated status in said status games? Because all I got in real life was accusations of being a conspiracy theorist. And I'm sure if I brought it up now, I'd be greeted with classic Hillary-style "What difference, at this point, does it make?" responses, just like people are doing in this thread.
Because it seems like all I got for being a principled free thinker was having to quit my job and move states to avoid a vaccine mandate. Somewhere the elevated status and MAGA babes got lost, and Peter Thiel won't send me a check or return my calls (granted, I'm probably too old and hairy for him).
millenials are the triple IPA artisinal 15% beer and ironic PBR generation.
"Are" should perhaps be "were." As a bunch of us cruise solidly into our 40s, I've noticed the move from 18% imperial stouts to non-alcoholic fizzy waters.
No reason at all. I noticed the behavior changes and noticed 2 things in common. Given people talk about the positive behavior changes from GLP1 drugs, I thought it was worth tossing out a question on possible negative effects.
I don't know if that's a common story from a 50something guy doing HRT, but it's not an uncommon story.
Those are just called ACX readers.
See my reply below. It's way more than new clothing.
Yes, spending money on luxury cars, buying a ruinously expensive house in an exclusive neighborhood, taking expensive vacations, etc.
A more serious question: have you noticed any negative behavior changes in people you know who have started taking GLP1 drugs?
2 people I've known for 20 years have gone on such drugs, and both have started displaying far more materialistic behavior than ever before. It might just be midlife freakouts, but then I realized that besides their ages, they also had GLP1 in common.
What's your preferred type of Millennial beer (non-alcoholic barely-flavored carbonated water)? I'm partial to the lacroix limoncello and sunshine flavors, but it's not like any type/brand is much more than tv static + a hint of flavor.
You're among friends here. You can admit you chose the Roman towel boy.
If only that were true (perhaps it's true for successful ones). For the kind who get assigned a public defender when they get caught and charged, it is certainly not true. They love long text conversations full of "code" that wouldn't fool a 6th grader, and they never delete text chains. They are also very active on social media since it's not like they have anything better to do.

This was a good enough writeup to get me to Google it and see that I'd been had. So... solid bait.
