That's certainly one partial cause of their malady, but hardly the only one.
IMO it's important to keep in mind that the vilification of all things right-wing is probably stronger in Germany than in any other democratic country in the world. By far. By orders of magnitude. I suppose I needn't explain why or how. The German moral compass consists of "nazi" on one end and "good" on the other, and any political activity will attempt to place itself right on the good end, moving away from it only so far as practicality demands, and such practicality must always be accompanied either by a certain amoral or asocial streak, or by extensive burden of justification.
What this means is that it's trivially easy to just be an uncritical, perfectly fanatical, purity-spiralling ever-more-extreme leftist in Germany, and even in establishment Germany. By being maximally distant from the moral pole of all evil, and pushing further away from it, you automatically have the moral high ground and you can rightly consider yourself beyond reproach, and no reproach will come to you from polite society.
This in turn has the consequence of the left being absolutely loony, and there being no mechanism to reign it in. And naturally this effect is strongest in the nominal Left party, Die Linke.
In my view that's the strongest cause for their misfortunes - their increasing disjunction from reality, which can only increase over time due to the German moral compass.
Unrelated: The German right is also insane, also due to this moral compass, but in different ways. It takes madmen to go and occupy the moral pole of all evil.

I'm instinctively supportive of such killings, probably because such people viscerally disgust me and I see no good reason for their existence, but rationally I can't really muster any argument in support of my inclination. You're right. My feelings are wrong.

You want unique wisdom, then go and ask the people who had the experience. I mean, it seems you bought into the notion that you can generate personality traits or attractiveness or valuable experiences by going through with some zany scheme, and you also seem to be genuinely mentally ill to the point of holding ridiculous delusions as factual truths, but maybe you'll manage to consider the following: Other people have done what you consider your best path forward. Go and talk to them. Ask them about how great it is to be married to mental and biological failure. Ask them how much they get out of their lives when most of it is spent propping up that which fails to give reason to its existence beyond a hole between its legs. Maybe take a good look at them, figure out whether they're the kind that made their peace with fate and are waiting for death to release them from the shitshow they failed to extricate themselves from, or whether they're deluding themselves into thinking that what they're doing will ever get any better, or even that it's valuable. Also try to figure out how much of a burden their ward is on the people around them.
Your ideas are wrong, all wrong, and I am unreasonably angry about someone wanting to throw themselves and everyone around them into decades of misery. But it's none of my business. Go ahead, make the biggest mistake of your life. We all die eventually, and what does it matter whether you turned your life into an existential horror show. From what you wrote so far it seems your mind is beyond reason or repair, so all we can do is accept your planned self-destruction. Easy to do, since I don't know you.

No it won't. Not unless you spend several years out there. Any behavioral changes caused by a brief period of exceptional activity will be undone by your subsequent resumption of normalcy.
Found myself digital versions of Sam Chamberlain's My Confession. Haven't read beyond page one so far, but I'm looking forward to it with the caveat that there seems to be no obtainable version of the book that is easily readable on modern devices, contains the original illustrations, and has not had passages removed. Still need to pick my poison.

Has it occurred to you that having gone to war, gotten PTSD and started drinking is downstream of whatever the source of their attractiveness is? They are different people from you, and you cannot become them by emulating their feats, not even to a reduced extent.

I am jealous of you even having this option, even though I harbor no hopes of being able to do it anywhere near as well. Maybe I'll need to emigrate to Austria or some other place that doesn't outright ban homeschooling, after all. No idea whether the daughter would be fit for it, though.

German healthcare is also great purely on paper. You pay a fortune in I-can't-believe-it's-not-taxes and what you get is somewhere between indifference, incompetence and bureaucratic nightmares. At least that's my experience with it.

Honestly, I think that's reading too much into it. I think it's perfectly possible to have a long and successful martial arts career without ever needing to internalize the potential lethality of any hold if it were used beyond the point of tapping out, because it never comes to that in organized settings.
