Man, you've been around here long enough to know that this doesn't fly. Three-day ban and frankly this is lenient because you've been here so long, but, like, that won't last forever, calm down with the accusations.

This is both low-effort and building consensus. Put more effort into your arguments and avoid this kind of flat evidence-less claim, please.

Because we don't have the ridiculous amount of time required to vote on everything, and even if we did, there's an accuracy cap imposed by being individual people.

I actually used to call this the Megaphone Project, in that the goal is to amplify the mods' approximate desires beyond the reach of the mods' actual abilities. The ideal goal is to rate every post in the way that a committee of people-with-the-rough-intentions-and-understanding-of-the-mods would agree upon after discussion. But using far far fewer resources than that.

I do want to note that there's a lot of value in wisdom of crowds. I suspect that, when it's built, this system can be more accurate than even a hypothetical where I personally go through and rate every comment. I fuck up sometimes, I'm just human, while a committee of three people is going to fuck up less often than that; if that committee is picked by "people who generally agree with the mods" then it's entirely possible that committee will do a better job than any individual mod could.

We should probably change that, yeah.

This nickname is potentially very confusing, and I'm gonna ask you to rename your account; you can find an option to change it in the "Settings" page.

Yeah it's pretty nice, honestly. The code is kind of a pain to work with; I've put it in our queue, reasonably high up, but it'll take a bit.

Keep in mind you don't need to be limited to under the streets; most buildings don't go that deep, but road networks can go pretty dang deep. There's a lot more "under Manhattan" than limiting it to under the streets.

Hey there!

I am totally removing this thread. Sorry. I know you're unlikely to do this, but if you do want to post, go check out the rules.

I've dubbed this thread the official rdrama.net hangout, so if you want to go post your questions there, go for it. But a few of them you'll want to tweak or those will get removed too.

Is this really where the bar of a slur is?

Yeah, frankly. We keep it pretty low.

Are you going to apply this level of sensitivity to everyone?

Yes. If you think someone's pushing the line, report it; if it gets approved and you disagree, you're welcome to ping modmail if you feel strongly about it.

We’re supposed to check the history of a person’s consent to pronoun before we refer to them in the simplest way possible, come on. Just let the pronouns go free.

Honestly, if it's a legit mistake, I'm not going to care much. I'm probably just going to say "hey don't use that for that person, thanks". It's more when someone is doing it intentionally and repeatedly that I start telling people to knock it off. I'm not sure we've ever given out a warning for this, let alone a ban.

And remember that gender-neutral pronouns are always acceptable, as is not using pronouns - if you don't want to keep track of what people's identity is, there's two easy global solutions.

So, here, I'm gonna post this in the main thread, but I'll show it to you first (and I guess anyone else who checks my comment page, hi there!) Here's the current prototype for the single-issue-poster rule:

We occasionally have trouble with people who turn into single-issue posters, posting and commenting only on a single subject. We'd like to discourage this. If you find yourself posting constantly on a single subject, please make an effort to post on other subjects as well.

This doesn't mean you need to write megaposts! This can be as simple as going to the Friday Fun Thread once in a while and posting a few paragraphs about whatever video game you last played. But this community is fundamentally for people, and if a poster is acting more like a propaganda-bot than a person, we're going to start looking at them suspiciously.

This rule is going to be applied with delicacy; if I can find not-low-effort comments about three different subjects within your last two weeks or two pages of comments, you're fine.

Does that work?

Is @fuckduck9000 correct that I should be more vociferously calling out apparent bad-faith posters who purport to share some funhouse-mirror version of my views?

Honestly I'd like it if everyone did that more often :V

Alright, quick mod request. Most of this is fine, but there's a few bits that are stated as fact and really need some backing up:

Japan of the 1950's was in the throes of a Judeo-American imposed cultural revolution.

in the past 50 years the US has seen over 100 thousand white people murdered by black criminals.

Jews and catholics running the show,

I recognize you fleshed one of those out later, which I appreciate, but - "Proactively provide evidence in proportion to how partisan and inflammatory your claim might be." - that's pretty partisan and pretty inflammatory and needs some level of backup.

It currently uses the same format that the profile comment view does, which means there's no context built-in but you can click the appropriate links to see context.

This is absolutely something that I'm not perfectly happy about and would love some feedback on once people have been using it for a bit.

(it's also surprisingly a pain to change in any significant way, but I'll have to deal with that issue at some point anyway)

Alright, you've been warned about derogatory tropes and antagonism, and you've been warned about darkly hinting weakman opinions about your outgroup. Now you're just being racist, which puts you under be no more antagonistic than is absolutely necessary and provide evidence in proportion to how partisan and inflammatory your claim might be.

Read the rules carefully and stop doing this sort of thing. This time you're getting a three-day ban.

I believe there is a Block button, but I'm not sure exactly where it is; maybe their profile? We may redefine what "block" means at some point, note.

We answer your questions when you ask them and try to explain the difference of opinion.

Also, we aren't gatekeeping an international-tier discussion forum.

This is . . . not super-coherent, I'm afraid. I recommend trying to figure out what argument you're actually trying to make and doing a better job of supporting it; right now it's pretty much all over the place.

Given that this is your very first post I think you'd be better off posting in another thread, and I recommend doing that after you've refined this a bit.

It's actually kinda broken on Chrome too; the only part that changes, I suspect, is that it skips to the right comment. Still loads the page though.

We've got plans for fixing that, we just haven't gotten there yet I'm afraid. Legacy of the old codebase.

I feel kinda dumb for not thinking of that, frankly.

Yeah, that's a good idea!

Oh man I would be like a thousand percent tempted to start putting in troll slur filters.

Hmm.

Part of me thinks that isn't a terrible idea, just to get people reading the site and kinda, y'know, ease them in.

But another part of me thinks that this comes across as being ashamed of what we're posting, and I'm just not ashamed of it. I'd sorta rather look people in the eye and say "yes, we are debating controversial things, deal with it".

I'll keep this in mind but my current feeling is that it's not worth the downsides. I'm not entirely convinced by myself yet, though.

We don't have emote reacts yet, but if we did, I'd be putting a "+1" emote on this post.

Keep in mind that our goal is to be a discussion site for people with differing opinions. Nothing there says we need to coddle people, but it also doesn't say we shouldn't coddle people; if asking that people tone down their most extreme opinions gets us more of what we're looking for, that's actually a good thing.

And there are many many many people who have kneejerk reactions to things.

You can use https://camas.unddit.com/ to do a lot of queried searches, and "your username, on The Motte" would be an easy task for it. If you're handy with a scripting language you can use it to dump JSON files containing everything you're looking for.

912.

Hah. Well, alright then. Fine.

Thanks :D

Aha. Yep, good catch. I'm not gonna panic over this right now but it's on the list.
