It doesn't have to be very fast, because geological timescales are so large.

Consider colonization of the milky way.

The width of the galaxy is 100,000 light years. Let's say some civilization travelled at .0001 the speed of light between stars (the fastest man made probe is travelling at .0005 the speed of light) . And on average they had to stop every light year to build up, grow crowded, and then expand outward again. These stops take them 1000 years.

It would take them 200 million years to colonize the galaxy if they started at the very edge. Which is a long time for an individual, but short on geological timescales. If Earth2 on the opposite side of the galaxy had dinosaurs with a space program at the same time we had dinosaurs, then they would have already arrived here before humans evolved.

I think technological limits could drastically change the shape of the results.

For example, if offensive technologies are really easy and defense is really hard, then you might get a MAD sort of truce.

If creation of valuable resources is easy there might be no benefit to seizing a bunch of solar systems.

If information and entertainment become the most valuable/scarce resources then you'd have a situation where older civilizations foster and grow new ones.

So in the country where it’s cheap to have kids, high income people have more kids and where it’s expensive they have fewer kids. This is surprising.

Is it though? Shouldn't we expect rich people to be more responsive to monetary incentives? They have already demonstrated some level of caring about and being capable of responding to such incentives.

Removed, no bare links.

Hadn't thought of that interpretation. Looked like one user calling another user am "unsuccessful rapist". Which to me implies a desire/attempt to carry out rape, but falling short of it. We don't call getting caught for murder "attempted murder", we call trying and failing to kill someone attempted murder.

If any other mods are available on Thanksgiving they can feel free to override my decision if they think your interpretation is more likely.

Either way, it is better to write a longer post explaining things than trying to trick someone into a reductio interpretation.

This is an inflammatory claim and should be backed up with some level of evidence 2 day ban.

Not acceptable behavior on this forum 5 day ban

I'd meant to write it a few weeks ago, I had some free time yesterday so I wrote it up.

I guess some people overestimate their ability to withstand dog piling. Or they see the top 5 or 6 comments in the chain which are usually not too bad. But lots of mod action is buried in the sub threads.

Your recent comments don't seem to e down voted too heavily. Nothing below -1 that I saw in two pages.

I do agree that getting down voted on a post but having no one respond is a huge annoyance.

But the votes might be an actual useful signal of something about how you are engaging. Not just reflexive agreement or disagreement. I've always disliked when we hide votes behind a 24hour waiting period. I find them to be vague but useful signals that work best in real time.

I checked on UD before posting, but you might be right. I don't actually use twitter, I'm just trying to use the cool kid lingo. I should have stuck to calling it dogpilling.

Was it a slightly chubby, boobless, and not all that attractive woman in her thirties in the doujin?

That is a partisan and inflammatory assertion and needs more evidence to back it up.

I used to use public transit in my city when I was a broke college kid. There were many daily commuters and I didn't really notice the issue of it being dirty or gross.

I personally witnessed plenty of women being hit on. Heck, I've hit on women myself, and been hit on / stalked home.

The one incident that stands out in my memory actually appeared to be semi-consensual. A very drunk man with a thick latino accent was hitting on a fat, possibly mentally retarded woman. They were having lots of trouble communicating due to their respective impairments. I had about a twenty minute bus trip, it started about 5 minutes into the trip and by the time I got off it sounded like they were working out the details of whose place they would go to. The drunk man didn't have much of a place, and the mentally retarded woman was worried that her guardian would stop any hanky panky if they went to her house. It was wild. I tried to look around the bus and see if anyone else was noticing this crazyness. Nope, they were all missing out due to headphones.

The time I hit on a woman I actually got a date out of it. I picked up a scrap of paper and wrote "You are cute :) text me [my number]" and dropped the paper on her lap as I left the train. She texted me back a few hours later and we ended up meeting for a date. It didn't go any further, I don't think she was romantically interested in me.

The time I was hit on I was coming back from a drinking event with co-workers. They all had to catch a different train, so I was left alone for a few minutes waiting for me train. I was pretty drunk and head was in my hands trying to rub some sobriety into my face. A drunk woman about a decade older than me was in the same situation, all her coworkers left on the earlier train and she had to wait for the later one. She chats me up on the platform, and then on the train. She lays out her worries and frustrations as a manager onto me. She tries to convince me to go to a bar with her, but I'm twenty and can't get into any bars (yes I was drinking illegally with co-workers). I tell her I just want to go home and sleep. She follows me all the way home. She sits on my couch talking to me for another 30 minutes while I drunkenly snack on something and semi-ignore her. Eventually I want to go to sleep and have to kick her out. She doesn't want to leave. I tell her I'll go to a bar with her, and that gets her moving. Once she is out of the apartment I close the door. She knocks on it for a few minutes and I kept telling her to go home. She finally leaves. This would have been near maximum level creepiness if the genders were reversed.

In summary just add me as another point of data to the growing pile that says "you are missing things".

I'll think about it. In general if I talk about a game then I liked it. I don't discuss games I dislike.

We have some major advantages over Twitter:

  1. We have far less content to moderate. I'd also guess that our ratio of moderators:content is at least two orders of magnitude better than Twitter's, and possibly even three orders of magnitude better.

  2. Most banned users aren't trying too hard. Twitter is a big platform and lot of people want to be on it. This is a tiny tiny platform that only a few hundred people want to be on. We had rdrama users trying to come over for the first few weeks, but consistent banning and removal of troll content mostly solved the problem.

  3. Some of the banned users that are trying hard seem unable to avoid outting themselves. If we ban a user that can't stop talking about a particular topic, and then notice a new user account created the next day that also loves to talk about the same topic ... well things can be pretty obvious.

There might be a group of banned users that comes back under different aliases and successfully hide. And they don't break any of the same rules that got them a ban in the first place. Idk, I guess I feel like "mission accomplished" if that is what happens. We aren't trying to punish people with bans, we are trying to reform, and permabans take place for two reasons: we think you are beyond reform, or we are trying to protect the community from extremely bad behavior (for example we are generally going to nuke any accounts that post CP).

I'll bring it to zorba/the devs attention. I guess I don't really know the expected behavior there.

That's my bad I removed that and had a message typed up, but never sent it. Basically what you wrote was too short for a top level post, I'd suggest just using the message feature instead of posting a top level comment in the culture war thread.

Which comments? I don't see any removed comments on your profile from the last month.

Typically ban evasion is the reason for nuking posts and comments.

Playing a new game: ZERO Sievert

Very interesting and fun mix of top down shooter + roguelike mechanics + RPG mechanics + post apocalypse setting. There is lots of dying that has taken place. And the game has forced me to actually be very cautious about engagements. A single engagement with "easy" enemies can go wrong and kill you after you just spent twenty minutes slowly collecting items.

Areas turn pitch black at night, but once you get night vision goggles you can become a stalker of the night.

The video game footage shows the character getting in close range shooting matches with opponents. This footage had to have been made on some kind of cheat build. As far as I can tell the only viable path to survival is to get the longest range gun possible and snipe enemies before they know you are there. Tight corridors and fights inside of buildings are truly frightening because walking around a corner being the second one to shoot will kill you. If you manage to shoot first you still might bleed out from wounds if you don't bandage yourself quickly. The giant spiders, packs of wolves, and monsters with scythe arms are good for jump scares, but once you know how to handle them they don't pose too much danger. Its always the other humans that you can't trust.

I'm enjoying the detail with regards to weapons in the game. There are 34 different types of ammo , and 40 weapons which has been some awesome learning for me. I always learn things better through video games, and I've been meaning to learn more about the various types of ammunition. The Mosin Nagant has been my choice of weapon, and I'm always on the lookout for any 7.62x54mmR ammo on my scavenging runs.

Do not be deliberately antagonistic, this was right after another mod warning. 5 day ban.

I am not trying balance moderation for a single discussion thread.

Most of your posts have been "hot takes" and low effort sniping. This post in particular picked up three reports. Not everything you write has to be a long effort post, but at least some of them should be.

Three day ban for now. Use the time to browse themotte more and get a sense for the level of discussion around here.

Things can be true and still against the rules. Many of our rules are about courtesy and how you say things. For example, saying "I think someone is [insult]" is almost always true and almost always against the rules.

The part you quoted wasn't the worst part of the post, this was:

The existence of God isn't even in the top 10 things I'd love for wokies to shut up about.

This is too much of a boo outgroup post. 1 day ban for user.
