Can we have a thread about Alex Jones? Apparently the "victims" of his actions are pushing for something like a trillion dollar award.
I get it, he spoke some really shitty things about some people that just lost their children in a horrendous event. I can't imagine what they're going through. But I can't get past this mental block of "Yeah he said some shitty things, but he never directed his followers to do harassment, and the parents essentially just got cyber bullied, like just walk away from the screen, seriously. There were like two incidents of real life harassment, which have been prosecuted, and also were inflicted upon the parents who chose to engage with the public media."
Am I missing something here? Why is he being destroyed so thoroughly?

I don't care. The people making these forms of media openly hate people that look like me and I've accepted it. I do not support them or pay any attention to them. If a coworker or friend brings up some new thing, I say I've never heard of it and it sounds boring. Stop supporting bad art - our culture is lacking in decent art and you'd do well to seek it out and support it vehemently. Don't waste brain cells debating about some reimagining of a classic by people who hate it.

I just find it all so tiresome. Trump had the opportunity to jail his political opponents and didn't even try. Meanwhile, the democratic machine is going to extreme efforts to strain legal precedent in order to put their opponents in jail, and have had varying degrees of success. I have to believe that this is purely projection.

One of the things I was pretty interested in when visiting various less developed nations is that there was a surprising lack of visible homelessness. Example: Thailand. There were no homeless on the streets outside of extremely and visibly disabled people (missing arms/legs/eyes, severe mental disabilities, etc). I suppose it's easy to stay off the streets if you can just go buy some coconuts and sell the juice on the street without a gaggle of PMCs following you around issuing fines. The barrier to entry for commerce seemed to be minimal at the actual worst.
Now I look at the US with many of its large cities overrun with homeless encampments, hear about bullshit like some jurisdictions enforcing a "flower arrangement license" and it really makes me disgusted at the evil we have wrought.

Nutritional points aside, I don't get why vegans never seem to actually grapple with the morality of the fact that industrial agriculture kills millions of rodents, birds, and other animals all the time in the course of harvesting their crops. Unless you're getting all your vegetables from backyard farms, you're going to be killing animals in the course of harvesting your kale. This isn't a meme argument, if you have qualms about killing animals, why do you vegan?

I put "victims" in quotes because I do not believe them to be victims in the context of Alex Jones's actions. They are victims of a great deal of other grievances, namely the brutal murders of their children. But Alex Jones's actions do not seem to rise to the level to which I'd classify these parents as victims. And I do not believe they deserve the outrageous numbers ($) that are thrown around left and right in this context.

Interviewing for a new job, in the final steps. The recruiter has stated that the team lead wants to chat before they extend an offer as a get-to-know-you type of thing.
They have provided the team lead's linked in profile, and they're very clearly a "gender-goblin": purple hair with side shave, dressed as if they're at a renn-faire, pronouns galore, lots of posts about promoting DEI and complaints about white men.
Being a straight-white-male, what's the best way to approach this interview and potentially disarm this person's anti-straight-white-male prejudices? Do I ask about the company's DEI efforts and policies (even though I don't give a shit)? Do I attempt to come off as gay as possible (not too hard, I have gay-ish hobbies and I can fake a lisp)?
I really want this job, it would result in a 40% salary bump and my current job is sliding into a shit show. It would really suck to have it tanked by some progressive golem at the last mile.

I don't think you're right that women hate conservative men. They'll gladly pair up with conservative men, as long as that man's conservative views aren't verbalized in a socially unacceptable way. Women as a population group also hate football. They hate guns. They hate cars. They hate physical competition. They hate bitcoin. They hate woodworking. But they don't care if their men are into those things. They also don't care if you think the minimum wage is bullshit.
They'll gladly hate the amorphous groups of "football fans", "gun nuts", or "crypto bros", but that doesn't mean they hate individual men in those groups.

That's a thought I've had as well. Maybe the heroine's journey is the way it is because of the fact that women are different from men. Struggle for women is different from struggle for men.
When I go through a breakup or a death or a struggle, as a man, I deal with it. I sit in the pain, I learn about myself and the world. But I also am likely to engage in self-destructive behaviors. My experience is such that I am forced to grapple with the thing on it's own, on my own. Often with a great deal of examination of why I'm shitty, how I contributed to said bad thing.
When women I know go through a bad thing, they call upon their network, they have endless supporters (even if said supporters are superficial and transactional), but they have their support that insists they are great and the thing is actually horrible and not their fault. Women struggling involves them calling upon their vast social network of mostly female supporters. There isn't a concept of loneliness in one's shittiness for any women I know.
The heroine's journey simply resonates with women, and men think it's asinine. Women probably don't resonate with the hero's journey in the same way that men do either.
Whether one or the other is more or less "good" depends on the audience.

One of the most valuable courses I took in college was formal logic. I took two of these classes in community college before transferring to a university and to this day remain the most impactful. Basically Modus Tollens and such.
It fundamentally transformed the way I think more than anything, up until getting into software engineering, which I view as an extension of formal logic.
It would be so great if more people had exposure to such topics. But I don't have any faith that it would make a difference. Most of the people in my classes lamented it, viewed it as incredibly boring and hard, and did the absolute bare minimum to not fail the class.
I fully support the idea of a poll test. Too many of our countrymen are just downright idiots. They should not have a say in what we do as a nation.

I've found myself in the position of being responsible for my elderly mother's finances. She has 800k to her name and has to earn approximately 20k per year off of it for necessary expenses.
I have a totally different risk tolerance in my station of life than she does, so all of my knowledge kind of goes out the window.
For now I have about 300k of her money in a HYSA, earning 4%. Not really sure where to park the rest.
JP Morgan keeps hassling her about some of their managed funds. Gotta admit I'm kind of attracted to allowing them to manage it (with a 1.3% fee though). They also are pushing an annuity which I just went ahead and declined.
If I just put everything into a CD at this point, it'll more than cover her expenses, but who knows what rates will do in the future and it seems like leaving money on the table (which at her age might be fine to buy some security). Also, she'd love to maintain as much as possible to leave to her 4 children. How would you handle this?

You'd have to criminalize renting to illegals, both residential and commercial. And selling property to them too. Setting up a business entity/LLC. They can and do just set up entire mini economies in some areas of cities. You'd have to criminalize so many different things to make moving here unappealing. And I'm sure even then there'd be a way for them to enjoy their lives here more than in whatever country they came from.

Underrated post. I've kind of had this notion in my mind for a while but seeing it written out really put words to something that was just a feeling before. This sentiment comes up for me most often when I hear about indigenous land acknowledgements before speeches or whatever. It makes me cringe. Why? Because the conflict is over. They were conquered. There will not be a successful independence movement in any of our lifetimes. Let's move forward.

Raised catholic here.
The molestation scandal was such an unprecedented breach of trust that went high up into the leadership of the church. To recover from that evil requires unprecedented repentance. And that has not happened.
I will never support the Catholic Church in its current form because of that. It is institutionally corrupt. Perhaps it always has been.
And perhaps the teaching have nothing to do with the leadership. In that case, I will not listen to sermons from the priests who prop up the evil institution. I'm perfectly able to read the Bible on my own.

It's interesting because eating food "just for the taste" is in a way affirming the evolutionary reason. Our taste buds evolved for a reason. Just because we've figured out how to make some tasty foods that lack nutrition doesn't mean we like to eat doritos despite our evolution. Our bodies literally think we are getting nutrition when we seek that out.
Likewise, a woman painting her face and dressing scantily may tell herself it's for her own confidence or whatever. But it doesn't refute that she's doing it for male attention and reproductive success. I think the audience discussion is a bit of a red herring, although there are some interesting points to be made there.

Yes, they're off-putting. The septum makes me think of leading around a cow on my dad's farm, tongues seem very unsanitary and it fucks with their speech, and gauges (particularly very large ones) are super gross when the jewelry isn't in.
I saw this when my ex fiancée ended things abruptly and without explanation. We had been planning our family and kids and home and such. After the split she gained tons of weight, dyed her hair and got tons of tattoos, is stuck in a dead end job now, and apparently is constantly flooding social media with leftist shit. Her family doesn’t know what happened either because she cut them off at the same time.
I chalked it up to people being weird, but then I met a new friend in town and found out almost the exact same thing happened to him this year. Then I met a third dude whose wife left him and blew up her life and he has been watching her spiral. Then I learned a fourth guy who I have known for a while had a similar story and I had to throw my hands up. These are men I met through a diverse set of circumstances: mountain biking, remote worker meetups, church, etc.
I do think with this topic, there is a gendered problem underlying it all. I read a lot about the male loneliness crisis, or think pieces on why men are dropping out of the dating pool and I can’t help but draw nebulous connections with these experiences. I don’t know if it’s feminism’s fruits, being over medicated on ssris and birth control, or the neutering of men in society, but something is broken.
